Causality
Part Four
The moment his brother vanished, everything exploded into white flame. His scream was engulfed in the ensuing roar as he flew backward, all sense of distance and time void from him, as if he were suspended in nothingess.
The moment he crashed through the desk into the wall, the world returned, although it spun dizzyingly as he fought to regain his bearings from the floor. Hiro was crumpled against a nearby wall, and his friend, Ando, was rubbing his head in disorientation.
But the screaming was gone. The pain had reduced to a dull throb in the back of his mind, and reality had calmed down once more.
But nothing was alright...he wouldn't dare say anything was okay as he used the broken desk to pull himself back to his feet. Reality was patched up, the pain was gone, the world wasn't broken...
But everything was wrong, because Nathan was gone.
A silent sob escaped him, as he brought a hand to his mouth, struggling for coherence, composure, an alternative tactic of returning for his brother--to do it right this time.
"Peetah..."
He didn't look at the man standing next to him. "How did..."
"He...he was able to repair the wound in time." Hiro said hesitantly. "Sometimes...undoing what you undo fixes it."
"And..." Peter turned a cold glare at the smaller man, hand still gripping the shards of wood next to him. "Nathan would know that how?"
"Ah..."
"I told him." The man in the back, Ando, said quickly, stepping forward. "I told him what Hiro taught me...it was either that, or all of existance would cease to be."
"Oh..." Peter scoffed, shaking his head. "So it's either the world or my brother, then? You're saying I have to choose between Nathan and the world?"
Hiro took a step backward, before frowning in frustration. "There is no choice, Peetah! You can't change the past!"
"I can do whatever I have to, to save my brother!" He roared, lashing out at the two men and sending them crashing into the walls behind them.
"I thought it was usually my job to save you, Pete."
He froze. Hiro and Ando's eyes widened in synchronization with their mouths falling open.
His chest ached as if his heart had missed a couple of beats as he turned toward the voice. Standing on the other side of the room, in front of the other door, his brother wore a warm smile. Not that annoyingly fake kind he gave reporters, either.
"Nathan?"
"Hey, Pete."
He moved across the room to pull his brother into a fierce hug, but collapsed to the floor as soon as he got past the desk. His brother was kneeling in front of him before he could fully register why his legs had given out beneath him.
"Whoa there, Peter." Nathan cautioned, grabbing his shoulders to steady him.
He blinked back tears, looking up at his brother in confusion and perhaps a hint of awe. "Nathan...how...?"
He shrugged. "Sylar came, I blacked out...when I wake up there's a hole in the wall where my favorite window used to be, and Sylar's no where to be seen. I did what any sane person would do and left."
Peter glanced over toward the window his brother implied, and frowned at the boards nailed across the area where it had been. That hadn't been there before...
"You've been missing for a week, Pete..."
"How'd you know to look here?"
He smiled. "I knew you'd come around here sooner or later."
Peter launched forward and enveloped his brother in a desperate hug, burying his face in his brother's pressed suit, absorbing his scent, and his warmth. He was really, truly, completely, totally alive. Alive.
"I missed you, Nathan."
His brother patted him awkwardly. "Yeah, sure...good to see you too, Pete."
"You did it, Peetah..."
Peter pulled away from his brother to look up at the younger man momentarily. "Hiro..."
Hiro smiled nervously. "You changed the past, Peetah...that means..."
"We have a chance!" Ando piped in. "We can stop the explosion, we can save New York!"
Peter grinned, leaning into his slightly confused looking brother for support as he got to his feet. "Then lets do it. Lets go save New York!"
Hiro thrust his sword into the air triumphantly. "We heroes!"
Nathan shook his head, chuckling. "I hope you all know how insane that sounds."
Peter grinned.

AN: Well, so maybe it ended just a little cheesily, but hey, with Hiro can there be any other way?
