A Promise

Dec 15, 2006 22:46

I realised something this year which I'm sorry for and that's that I let my own beliefs be trampled under the stupid idea of keeping an open mind. Since I managed to achieve little that way and actually ignored my values occasionally I wrote this piece.

promises, me

When people say keep an open mind, I don't think they were thinking of something as extreme as this. Seriously, Console debates make theological discussions look like an outing between friends. :P

But on a more serious note I think there has to be a balance somewhere. You're quite right, there's a difference between respecting someone else's views and opinions and completely disregarding your own. Not only that, but it doesn't help if others don't give that courtesy back to you! People these days can just be rude, and while it's important to be polite, that doesn't mean others can walk over you either!

So do what you feel is right.

I am me if you don't like it your the one with the problemOnce again there is a difference between who you are and your opinions... but if you feel you'd be happier maybe you should make friends with some people of like mind rather than people you disagree with you on every important issue. I mean look at it like this: you = republican, christian, communist-hater and tired of everything to do with apartheid ( ... )

Tallulah this is not an attack on anyone, I was merely making a statement of affirmation for next year I do not want to throw away the only friends I've got at varsity and with regard to beliefs being trampled my own laziness in going to church is to blame. Its not just you people, I genuinely felt a hostile environment in the general population of Rhodes. The whole Fascist thing was directed at Prof Cobbing. I don't hate communism I just see its short sightedness.

Rhodes is *not* hostile. Rhodes is wonderful and accepting of everyone. You just have to find the right place with people who share your values... I'm not saying throw us away, I'm saying make some friends who understand you ( ... )
