One year later

It was one year ago today that we had to put the best dog in the world to sleep.  The cancer in his lungs was causing internal bleeding that couldn't be stopped.  The poor puppy couldn't breathe and didn't have the strength to stand.  We were with him until the end though, and it was my face he last saw when he closed his eyes, telling him I loved ( Read more... )

(HUG) As with all dog owners, I have been there, too. Twice before we had to put our Shelties down after they had been with us for over fifteen years. And I recall as a child accompanying my sobbing mother as we took the wonderful doggie I had known from infancy to be put down.

It hurts like hell, but, as the stone on my patio says, "Grief is the price we pay for love."

I guess you're right, and his life certainly provided MUCH more love than the pain of his absence.

Gorgeous dog. I know what it is to lose one like that - ours was a German Shepherd who was like Nana in Peter Pan to our children. It's been seven years now, and we still talk about her all the time. That's just how it is.

We got a dessert to toast to him, and the four of us took turns sharing stories about him. We also put up some pictures of him on the shelf where we keep his remains. It was nice.

I'm not ready to get another dog, probably not this year. A cat or two, maybe, but not a dog. Not yet.

Having lost Coco-kitty so recently, I understand completely. He was a beautiful dog. Maybe Coco's keeping him company until we all get there? That would be nice...

That would be nice, though he's probably chasing a lot of the time.

I hope there's a special animal heaven, or they just hang out until we get there.
