A group of artists has been asked to lighten the faces of children depicted in a giant public mural at a Prescott school.

The project's leader says he was ordered to lighten the skin tone after complaints about the children's ethnicity. But the school's principal says the request was only to fix ( Read more... )

This is my favorite article on the subject so far. My favorite part is the dripping sarcasm from the second to last line about how Blair is not a racist and he has been friends with Prescott's four black families for many years.

(Seriously, he counted the number of black families? Seriously?)

It's Arizona. I'm starting to resign myself to Arizona as being incredibly racist in general overtones. At least for the next few months.

Good God, is there a competition for which state can show the most racism and/or general stupidity?

And others. Like my local bit of stupid here in Mississippi: "A girl wants to wear a tuxedo to prom and take her girlfriend? No! We shall cancel prom instead!"

At least it's good that these idiots lost.

I remember driving by that mural with my folks last week - as it's directly between their house and my house - and my dad shaking his head and commenting that some asshole was going to make a stink.

And ha! No racial controversy in Prescott... this is the same town where, when a local independent group put up billboards in Spanish explaining census info wouldn't be released for 10 years, to encourage illegals who were afraid to send in info, locals defaced it daily so the words were unreadable.

Prescott is a strange town. It's one part retired grouchy rich old people, one part hippies, one part snooty Californians who abandoned California since it was too liberal. There are a hell of a lot of conflicts like this, they just don't get much attention.

I'm personally friends with a bunch of the Prescott Art Mice (one of the groups that worked on the mural) and this whole situation is just making us so sad and so angry.
