Tidelands, by Philippa Gregory. Atria Books, 2019I really enjoyed “The Other Boleyn Girl”, so I was very happy to get a pre-release copy of ‘Tidelands’. I was disappointed I read it; I felt it wasn’t nearly as well written as TOBG was. It’s the first in a series, so there is a lot of stage setting to be done, and it was done well and in detail. I'm a bit lost: who is James, other than a potentially muddy-clear-to-the-oxters bloke encountered on the tidal flats?

Ah, I see I have not really identified him. I was trying to say as little as possible so as not to be accused of telling too much = I've been accused of that before!

James is a Catholic priest, part of a plan to get King Charles from his island exile and put him on the throne again. He is not traveling as that, of course, as Catholicism is banned. He ends up having a relationship with Alinor- a big complication.

" I was trying to say as little as possible so as not to be accused of telling too much "

Certainly not trying to force your hand! You mentioned him, though, almost as if you'd mentioned him earlier, e.g., the missing husband, James; or one of Alinor's children, James; or some erstwhile, ersatz King James of dubious...lineage, so I felt I ought to have recognized who he is but I didn't, so I asked.

"He ends up having a relationship with Alinor- a big complication. "
Sounds like a big complication!

No, I haven't. I just now added it to my list at the library- not the hold list (because I've got a slow book coming up soon) but the 'interested' list that is now three pages long. And when I looked Witch Elm up in the library database, it also returned 'the Sparrow Sisters' because witches, so now *that's* on my list, too.. and for some reason, it also suggested Sylvia Plath's poem! I have read a few (very few) of Plath's poems, and they did not seem like these novels... the library search algorithms get addled sometimes!

Good reads suggested Sylvia Plath's poem to me as well and I am NOT a poetry reader.
Sounds as though somebody's trying to push her stuff...perhaps her publisher?

Hmm.. I think there was some new edition of her poems or something new they found in her stuff or something... I can't remember I just know that she was in the book news things a few months ago. You'd think the library search engine would be free of that kind of crap...

That sounds disappointing. I could never slog though 400 pages of anything. I liked The Other Boylen Girl.
