Rain all night, woke to snow on the ski hill- pretty low down, too. Sun actually came out around noon, so I worked outside, planting a feed sack full of iris roots. Had no time, space, or energy to plant them properly; they are packed into the ground (where we grew squash this summer) like sardines. They’ll need moving next year, but hopefully I’ll ( Read more... )

I'm a gardener, too, and I know the phenomena of thinking you will get so much planted, trimmed, moved--and then life gets in the way.

I separated my irises this fall and gave bulbs (or are they corms?) away. They are such beautiful flowers!

I like to grow a combination of perennial and annual flowers and I kind of specialize in poppies. I'm attempting to get the P. Somniferum to naturalize. We have had this most unusual warm, extended fall and the poppies got fooled and germinated. Now they will get frozen. Fortunately, I saved tons of poppy and zinnia seeds for next year's extravaganza.

Technically they are rhizomes, if they are bearded iris. Dutch iris have bulbs, and Siberians, Japanese, and pseudoacorus just have fibrous roots.

I like mixing everything up: bulbs, annuals, perennials, shrubs.. I love poppies but I have no luck with any but the Orientals here. In Los Angeles the P. somniferum self seeded like crazy. Sorry your's got mixed up what time it was... hopefully the ground has more that were smarter.

Rhizomes, fibrous roots, bulbs. I knew that. Sort of.

I am quite amazed that I have had such great luck with P. Somniferum here in Wisconsin. The trick is seeding them right after the last snow melts.

They like to germinate in cold soil, so I was particularly surprised when they got mixed up and germinated this autumn. You're right--some smarter seeds may still be in the ground. Plus, as I said, I saved many seeds.

I like to mix everything, too--fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs.

I do my herbs in pots, because our soil doesn't drain well and having edibles close to the septic system worries me. The tomatoes and peppers go in pots, too, (the peppers mostly in the greenhouse) and the rest of the veggies are out in a different area.

I do have the huge ass herbs like lovage, marshmallow, and valerian in the ground in the flower garden. I don't use them (except for giving valerian root to the cats) anyway; I just enjoy having them. Oh, and the catnip grows EVERYWHERE

Lol, I'm good at that too...assuring myself that I'll take care of that in the spring.

We made it down to 34 and I am still picking tomatoes. Should have covered the cages in plastic and I'd get a little more time. Going to pour here all weekend. Ugh.
