Long time no post. I read all your posts, but just haven’t had it in me to talk about my life, other than in comments. No idea why. No idea why I can’t seem to do a book review, although I *must* work on that today or at any rate soon. Nothing horribly bad has happened, but nothing extraordinary has happened, either.
Mother Nature seems to hate us

You folks have been having a time of it, for a fact!
I'm sorry it's so, and I'm rather amazed that we're seeing one named winter storm after another barreling across the country like box cars on a high balling freight train.
I love that your chicken is so polite! And I hope she does better as the weather improves which I'm trusting it will do. It's lovely of you and Tim to bring her indoors, bless you both!

Sounds as though you now have a house chicken.
We finally got a couple inches of snow Friday night but nothing compared to what you've gotten.
Hang in there, spring's coming.....but I'm beginning to think it's going to be a late spring for everyone.
It sounds as though you have the makings of a good horror story--if it didn't depress you too badly to write it.
Or at least a cautionary tale to tell the newly retired about the dangers of moving too far out into the wilderness.

Yeah, any minute now there's going to be hacking sounds from the door and Jack Nicholson's going to yell "Herreeeeee's Johnny!"

That's one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, if only because Jack Nicholson made you believe he truly had gone crazy.
I'm personally grateful the barred owls haven't had any territorial disputes in the past couple of years. Those laughing cries they make will make you think there's a demented psychopath loose in your woods.

I can't believe the chicken used the litter box! That is amazing.

I read all your posts too, even though I never post myself. I've spent the first two weeks of 2024 with covid, zero stars, do not recommend. Luckily I seem to have managed not to pass it on to anyone else, including my parents. It's cold here too at the moment although I hear where my aunt lives in Montana it was supposed to get down to -35 which is much worse than our 17. But we didn't even get more than a powder sugar dusting of snow out of it. For your drainage tube, could you put something warm on it? I know one of the suggestions for keeping hummingbird feeders defrosted here is wrapping it in a string of incandescent christmas lights, maybe that would work for your tube if there's somewhere to plug it in? I love that you have a house chicken.
