Troubled times

I have no idea if the potato I'm using for dinner is bad or not. It looks and feels like a good potato, but it was in the drawer for a pretty long time. Normally this is one of those times that smell/taste would tell all except I can't smell or taste anything ( Read more... )

Potatoes have a really long shelf life, they evolved to stay alive in dark places full of worms after the rest of the plant died. If it's not all wrinkled and yuck it's probably fine. Cut off the outside bits if it looks like it was trying to grow or photosynthesize, since that means it has also started to produce some solanine.

You have probably (hopefully!) eaten by now, but I second this completely! I have eaten many an ancient tater using this logic and have yet to suffer any kind of tater-poisoning.

Thank you! I did end up eating the potato and I think it was tasty. At the very least it did not get me sick, so all is well!
