This weekend I am in Chicago for graduate school reasons. After a six hour drive I finally make it to the hotel. Halfway through dinner the fire alarm goes off. Confused, I look out into the hall to see what everyone else is doing. Some of the other occupants are doing the same. I decide to follow the instructions that have been instilled in us

Actually, I just did myself an ill favor by reading an advance review of the last book coming out in the Black Jewels series - and it devastated me. I think I just lost a bit of faith my favorite author... and that is awful, because I was working hard on my Big Bang. Now I doubt it will be well-received because the posting date has been pushed out to *after* the book releases. And many fans are going to be upset over it. I can promise you that.
Sorry, that was dumb. Enjoy your stay in Chicago!

Not dumb at all. I've been there. Hell I can name an author right off the bat. Only thing I can say is, people change and that can affect how they right. A good way to get over it is to finish the fic as though you hadn't read the blurb.
If you're interested in pleasing the fans then write the fic how you think the next part should have gone. Don't read the book, finish the fic, then you have plausible deniability and you still love your story. And many of the fans might agree with you. It's a win/win/win.

I am going to finish my fic. I've put a lot of effort into it. It's just there are a culmination of things right now... the deadlines got pushed because of the host is running behind AND my beta is almost a month and a half late in returning what I've sent. And then factor in work... I just get the feelings that things are against me finishing.
This may sound selfish, but it hurts to think that I've put myself into this piece of work and no one is going to bother with it.

I can't really think of anything that you can do other than to just love what you write. Put your all into it. Then, even if no one else likes it, at least you do. And in the end that's what is most important.
