Fully understand you. I'm starting to hate lims. ^^ I like your first icon, even though I'm not the fan of such light colouring too, but this one has a very natural soft look. And the second one is beautiful too, but I'd really use the Blur tool for a fragment of hair, just a little touch. Though I know what you mean - sometimes the image comes out oversharpened, even when you just resized it. :S And maybe the one grey texture on Soft light would help - you know with the edges being darker, to make more focus on her face. But the colouring itself I like a lot.
Hmm saw the voting post and results... I don't know what's wrong with the voters. X( There are just a few that could be considered better than yours and still it's the matter of taste. Guess their problem was really that face came out a bit too orange, but still I don't think it should look like number three - that one is too over-brightened.
It is all a matter of taste, that's the thing. I just have to learn not to take it so personally. I just don't find the comments helpful - see your comment about the grey layer to soften her face was very helpful!!
