here, everyone who walked away walked far enough that they could no longer see the hotel behind them (assume like half an hour), then a few minutes later, saw it looming again in the distance ahead of them. So we were basically gone about an hour, and everyone ends up right back where they started)

Normally he wasn't one to give up but it took all his will power to bring himself back into the view of the hotel. "I'm beginning to think nothing around here is fair." The Doctor's voice sounded somewhat dejected.

She arrived back at the hotel just in time to hear the Doctor's comment. She grasped his arm, giving it a little squeeze. "Not everyone's back yet. Maybe someone made it out," she said hopefully. She began to look around for Wilson, hoping that he'd made it home.

At least for Sam, the youngest Winchester was thinking for a moment that he had beaten the hotel, but like the handful of others waiting in the distance, he too had been sent back to his trek's point of origin feeling a little defeated.
But also feeling a little bit okay with it because hopefully Dean would be back too, which meant Dean was still there and he could be around River. He and Dean could be around their Dad and Alice. Sam could spend more time possibly getting to know Inara and acquainting himself with some of the others ( ... )

There were only a few people who'd made it back before him, and they were all very...quiet. "Cheer up, folks. This is just the start," Jack said as he joined the group. "And on the positive side, it looks like everyone's making it back in one piece."
