Alice laid on the warm concrete next to the pool, eyes closed, a small smile on her face. It was hard to hate one's life when one had a pina colada in one hand and the warm sun on their stomach. Every now and again she rubbed at her skin with tanning oil, her desire not to burn but to get a slight tan. She'd always been pale, and never gotten ( Read more... )

"You're gonna fry," Peter said softly. He'd been surprised to find anyone out and about while he was out and about since it so rarely happened but he was happy enough to find Alice sunning. She'd given some sound advice, even if he couldn't put it to practice, and she'd been more company than he'd had the entire time he'd been here.

He guessed he could change that if he actually tried to meet people, but he'd always been kind of shy and backwards that way. The closest he could manage was hanging around on the outskirts.

Alice opened one eye and smiled. She sat up a bit, looking up at him over her stomach. "Probably. But it feels fantastic." She waved him over.

"How've you been, Peter? I don't see you around much. I figured I'd at least run into you at the dining hall." She was glad to see him. He was sweet.

Peter rubbed the back of his neck, giving Alice a sheepish smile. "I'm kind of a loner, these days. I never was much for company anyway, even before...well. I'm kind of a geek," he admitted, grinning a little. "Of course, if it had been about two or three years ago, I probably couldn't have looked at you without blushing. Gotta say, I've improved."

He sat down next to her so he wasn't blocking her sun anymore and watched the pool. It was odd, not being able to see without his glasses, and the glare from the water glinting onto the glass of his glasses was something he hadn't expected to ever have to deal with again. Resigning himself to glare, he shifted away and looked at Alice.

"Being a geek isn't a bad thing." She laid back down, stretching a little bit to wake herself up. "I'm glad you're not blushing. I'm used to it, but still. There's no point. You're in love with your girl - and you should be - and I'm spoken for already."

She couldn't wake up, and sat up to swing her legs into the pool. The water was cold.
