Personally I'd prefer no gift, to something you grabbed out of the closet, but some people need to give gifts.

Ditto.

Joe's parents sound a little like M's grandparents, who prioritize the number of gifts substantially over what's in them. This year, among other peculiar but well-intended things, they gave me a bar of Avon "Musical Angel Soap" (the angel is playing a trumpet; sadly, the soap itself is not actually musical, which was my first guess, so basically it's a bar of soap).

I'm kind of worried that this, along with a gaudy necklace, indicates a move toward angel-themed gifts. They are big on having gift themes for specific people.

Oh man. I was excited by the prospect of soap that plays music.

I hope they nip that angel theme in the bud. Last year I got random Avon gifts, but Joe's mom doesn't go in for the whole theme thing. Which is awesome.
