Okay here's the book discussion for Kiss of the Night. Remember that if you're going to refer to books that have not been discussed yet, put a warning in the subject line. Thanks and have fun. Also, feel free to post pictures of actors/actresses you feel would be perfect for certain characters ;) I can't wait to discuss Night Play next week.
As Sherri has said herself, there is always more than one side to every story and with Kiss of the Night that became very clear. Up until this book we only knew the Dark Hunter's side of the story, their point of view. We knew next to nothing about the Appolites other than the fact that they are the cursed children of the god Apollo, and that on their 27th birthday they died a slow and painful death, unless of course they chose to go daimon. That's it, we only knew what the Dark Hunters knew and in some way, like them were prejudiced against this race.
It was actually in my opinion, a good tactic for readers to start learning about the Appolites right along with Wulf. I felt more connected to this particular Dark Hunter than all the others simply because, oddly enough I had the same reactions he did when he discovered that Appolites weren't the monsters Dark Hunters thougtht they were. Wulf started out as every other Dark Hunter, he disliked (I won't go as far as to say hate because I believe that would be reserved for the daimons) the Appolites intensely, thinking that they should meet their fate with honor and not go and take the souls of the innocent simply because they did not want to die themselves. However upon meeting Cassandra and in a way getting to know some Appolites, he starts doubting what he had been told about them. It was pretty neat to experience Wulf's changing views on Appolites because I was right there with them. I had no idea that there were Appolite communes where Appolites could live safely and in peace. I didn't know there were different kinds of daimons like the Anaimikos, who feed off eachother, like Cassandra's sister Phoebe and the Agkelos, who prey on the souls of evil humans.
Cassandra's a spitfire really, and I think it has to do with her having been chased around all her life and being sick and tired of it. That and the fact that, she only has about 8 months to live and she doesn't really have time to waste being timid and weak. She's an awesome character and to be honest, I liked her more than Sunshine Runningwolf. Though Sunshine is quirky and has a lot of spirit, Cassandra is funny, daring and brave. She doesn't beat around the bush because she doesn't have that time, yet she isn't bitter towards her human companions. Her bravery and humor is just impressive, especially when she stands up to Wulf:
Cassandra held her hands up and returned his glare with one of her own. "Excuse me, Mr. Bad-Ass, but you will take another tone to me. I'm not your bitch to heel when you snap. I don't have to stay here."
Wulf is also a stand out character, I think because of his reluctance to get close to Cassandra and try to understand her and the rest of the Appolites. I doubt he ever thought about how it must feel like to know that you are going to die painfully on your 27th birthday when you did nothing wrong. The saddest part for me is when Dr.Lakis is slowly dying and as Wulf is leaving her home and she asks him if he understood now, what the Appolites went through, and why some chose to go daimon and he answers yes. At this point he has allowed himself to feel sympathy for the very creatures he had sworn to distroy.
Of course, while this story is, in my opnion, darker than the ones before, it isn't without it's very funny moments. Chris, Wulf's decendant is hilarious all on his own. He is the result of being WAY too sheltered, the fact that his social skills are even worse than mine is hilarious. That Wulf browbeats him to get a woman, ANY woman at this point, pregnant leads to some really amusing dialogue:
Chris's face went pale as he had another thought. "Oh, please tell me you brought her hom for you and not for me. You didn't pimp me out again, Wulf, did you? I swear I'll stake you in your sleep if you did."
"Has Wulf explained his little problem to you?"
Cassandra's eyes widened as she tried to think of what "little" problem Wulf could possibly have.
Unconsciously her gaze dropped to his groin.
"Hey!" Wulf snapped. "That has never been my problem. That's his problem."
"Bullshit!" Chris snapped. "I haven't got any problems there either. My only problem is you yenting at me all the time to go get laid."
But alas, my overall favorite moment is when Simi appears again, this time in the form of an infant. She's just so adorable, kicking like a real baby but shooting fire out when she sneezes. Her rambling is so entertaining. I also enjoyed Zarek's reappearance along with Talon, Kyrian and Julian. The exchanges between Talon and Zarek and then Ash and Zarek are priceless.
So what did you all think about this book? Anyone you'd have in mind to play certain characters?
