The bender was pale, still trembling after her encounter with the Faultline Triad leader. What had frightened her more? The prospect of being pulled back into gang life? Or of having her bending forcibly returned?

The last time he had seen her this terrified, she'd been lying on the floor in a cage, bound hand and foot, waiting to be taken to Amon. And he had been doing his level best to scare her more.

It occured to the Lieutenant that he was a jackass.

He laid a hand over hers, and she flinched.

"Please... I want to be human."

Six words that he hadn't understood back then, when she was still a bender -- six words that had showed Amon her value to the movement.

"I own you!" the Triad leader had shouted

I like how things finally click for him. Also, yay, gembending! Yay, Mi-Cha! Nasty the way people use gembending, though I think it's a good thing for the Lieutenant to see it's not just non-benders who get hurt.
