Freelance Payment?

Does anybody out there know how much money I should ask for the freelancing gig I have coming up? I'll be writing about Worcester for the College of the Holy Cross website. Is there an understood system for this kind of thing, like payment by word count, or payment by the article, or payment by the hour?

From what I've heard from other writers it's typically by word or by job (never by hour). The amount that you charge varries depending on the writing that you are doing, your writing credentials, etc. I have no idea about actual prices but I would start with thinking about how long this is goign to take you, how much effort is invloved and how much you would like to be paid. Ask them how they want to pay you, by word or job or whatever, and calculate how much to ask for from that. Start high and haggle. :)
