[for Pepper]

About once a week, I try to cook supper. I'm probably the most kitchen-capable person in the house (which probably isn't saying much, given who lives here), and a home-cooked dinner that hasn't been carried half-across the island is the least I can offer, given everything Pepper and Tony have done for me these past few months. "How about effusive gratitude and dish drying?" Pepper asks with a tug on the dish towel on Peter's shoulder. She shakes it out and reaches for a newly-washed plate. "Even if your cooking were worse, it couldn't be as bad as mine, and I still wouldn't have to walk half an hour to have my dinner."

Peter's cooking is good, though, and light years above anything she can manage. As for Tony, he hasn't been allowed in the kitchen unsupervised since he attempted Pepper's birthday cake back in January. It's safer for everyone that way.

"I'd say that qualifies as praise and gratitude," I reply with a bright, self-satisfied smile, lifting my chin to better sell the picture. Expression softening, I go back to scrubbing my pot, even if I can't help but preen a little more.

"Not that I don't appreciate help, Pep, but this is supposed to be my thank you to you, yanno?"

"Take pity on me, Peter, I used to help run a multi-national corporation," Pepper replies while she tucks the dried plate away in a cabinet. Reaching for the next, she offers him a wry smile. "Three years later, and there's still never enough for me to do in this place."

Even looking after Tony is easier, now, although they could both surely agree on that being a positive development.

It's not that I forget what Pepper and Tony used to do, but it's not something I actively think about, either, given that there's not much in the way of reminders. Swallowing a laugh, I shake my head, rueful.

"See, you say things like that, and then I wonder how the heck we're friends."
