by someone who has packed up and/or moved a LOT in the past 6 years
  • have enough boxes.  you will want to kill yourself if you get to the last box and realize you have 6 boxes worth of stuff to put in it.
  • sometimes, garbage bags will do.  but those garbage bags had best be heavy duty, or else they will rip.
  • don't put books in boxes that are too big.  ( Read more... )

- in order to avoid the dishes conundrum: invest in some disposable dishes/plasticware. also, bread, cheese, and PBnJ. the less cookage the better... also, these items travel fairly well.
- plan out a good moving outfit, with comfortable, yet no-lace shoes (to avoid trippage!)
- label everything well!!!!
- if planning on moving or storing things in coming months/years, invest in heavyduty tupperware/rubbermade containers for packing. they work better for carrying, last longer, stack easier, AND... bugs lay eggs in the spaces in corregated cardboard, so that's taken care of too.
- also, break down and remove cardboard from new residence as soon as possible to avoid those bugs hatching!

moving 4 times in six months right after college and lots of moving classrooms within a school buildings has taught me well! hope it helps!
