Our enormously productive economy demands that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfactions, our ego satisfactions, in consumption. A colleague in your state told me that someone who sees a therapist is now called a 'consumer'. As if 'client' was not businessy enough. Where I live, we still say 'patient'.
