Just... aw, crap, this computer only has Office 2007 on it, and I've never used it. Umm... make sure the top row has all field names in it ("name... date... blah..."), then click on Data, then... something. grr.
When you create the pivot table, you just drag the "name" field over to the left side of the new pivot pane, and then drag it again to the right side of the pane and you'll get a count by name.
Usually for excel documents I use other interesting programs, but one day I observed at the I-net a good tool, which to my great surprise solved out my old troubles with excel documents, indeed I hope the tool will help in this condition too - excel 2007 recovery.
