oh livejournal, i've missed you...

so, it's been a pretty busy month. i was working six shifts a week for a while there, and then got wrapped up in a very involved painting that took about 600 times longer than i expected. it's a lot bigger than the last few (3 foot square), but the imagery within is about the same size. so it was like making ( Read more... )

still haven't read blanchot... danschank October 27 2006, 20:01:10 UTC
... he's probably the one remaining canonical french pervert for me to explore (genet, bataille, lautremont, rimbaud, sade, huysmans, etc.).

the drawing is much lighter in touch than the rest of them, which is one thing i've sacrificed a bit in turning to gouache, etc. hopefully i'll find a way of working that approach back in. but no, it's not meant to be blurry a la gerhard richter or something... it's just a poor image.

i think i'll always struggle with some sort of literary component to what i do, but for now i can't really see myself working it back into the images. hopefully, i'll just emphasize a critical/writing counterpoint to my studio work, since that side of things interests me in a way that doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon. that piece is a bit of an anomaly though... i wonder what effect it will have over stuff i make in months to come. usually the weird ones pop up again in surprising ways.

glad to hear about the black book... and thanks for the goodwill, obvs...

once again, great work. I like the bird's face in 'up all night'

[Badiou's] insistance on universals scares me off a bit

and bringing everything back to math! I've always hated math...

yeah the math thing scares me off in badiou too. and spinoza. did you ever see the mathy version of spinoza's ethics? weird.

that bird was fun to draw.

(and for the sake of being totally random, the crazy lady that lives across the street from me is singing "frere jacques" for no particular reason on her stoop as i type this)

Beautiful work! Do you show anywhere?

A couple of things: I kept getting an internal error when I tried to read the Badiou interview and I wonder if it's the fault of my work's shitty firewall, or if there's something wrong for now.

Also, those Jill Greenberg portraits are photos. She distorts the shit out of them in Photoshop which is why they look like paintings. Her pictures of crying children are also wonderful.

Last: I really need to read that book and see that Bela Tarr film.

the links above worked for me. if you click on the link that says "carceraglio" i think it's the first post anyway... might give that a shot. it's a shame because you're one of the people on hear who might enjoy the interview most, honestly ( ... )

I think everything here is nothing short of amazing and I'd feel like I'd be doing a disservice to them by picking favorites. But I'm tempted to say that you're being hard on yourself regard "Up All Night", especially with that awesome close-up of the text and...Well, suffice it to say that I'm nervous just even going into detail about it since I'm sure you've heard your fair share of opinions and the last thing you need is hearing some trite observation. Thanks for the links as always, though I don't fancy myself a theory, politics or art person. (which may beg the question, why do I live?)

Again, awesome stuff.
