There are a lot of nasty people on the internet. No corner is safe from them :(

The power of anonymity is overpowering for some, and they take out their frustrations at living a powerless life by pretending to be bold, powerful and fierce while safely behind a screen.

In the end, the win there is that they are sad, shameful, miserable people whereas the rest of us only deal with them briefly, they are with themselves always :)

Hopefully it won't discourage your friend too much!

OMG - hit the nail on the head. Its true, weak people hid behind screens! If people had to actually say what they said to someones FACE I bet you they'd be singing a different tune!

Back in the earlier, simpler times of the internet, when it was mostly college kids with dial up to the university, or sitting in a computer lab on some sort of text based terminal ( Windows 3.11 wasn't too much for internet functionality back then)
.
I knew this kid who had internet beef with another kid. Same sort of hiding behind a screen nonsense. Only back then, you could usually tell what school someone went to 'cause they were something like "student_initials@whatever.edu". He looked the other kid up in the correct university directory, drove 3 states over to his residence, punched him squarely in the mouth and drive back home.

It was always rather heartwarming to me to know that at least once, one of those anonymous jerks truly got what he deserved.

As long as there are nasty people, there will be nasty people on the internet. It's just sad - you're right. I try to take more good from it though...when I can. *hug*

I wondered if you were reading. I miss hearing your thoughts, how you are and wonder about you (like I said). I'd love to hear about your college life - blog a little, for me. :) *love*

sadly, I don't think LJ is safe from nasty people, any more than any other internet site. And it's sad that there ARE trolls and people who are intentionally setting off people in communities that make it hard for non-troll people to state a differing opinion. Hopefully, your friend can take the good and leave the bad.

Always good to see what you have to say!

Unfortunately I find that the pagan communities on LJ are the WORST when it comes to supporting fellow pagans and solidarity. Not to say everyone has to be happy, sparkly people all the time but there is far too much negativity within the communities to feel the need to contribute anything worthwhile. I think in the past year I've only contributed to 'pimp_my_altar' on LJ, which is a quieter group and has more positive feedback.

Frankly, I think your friend should just continue what he's doing and instead of giving the impression that the site contains 'facts', but as a conglomerate of 'experiences' and personal opinions. That way, less flagellation ;)

I think LJ is kinda faceless, so people feel they have some sort of anonymity in their attacks, they attack for ANY reason, I got into an online feud because someone was stating that taking tylenol during a home birth negates it being a 'natural' birth.
good god.

Facebook it's less likely as it normally uses your real name and info....LJ can be a BITCH.
