I personally loved the shit out of Sherlock Holmes. I myself am not a huge buff on the books, but I know someone who is who still loved the adaptation. As long as you don't mind stories being reinvented, I'd highly recommend it.
And, idk about Sherlock Holmes. I know next to nothing about the original books and I thought it was merely okay, BUT I saw it late at night after having just seen Avatar 3D, so I might've still been too dazzled by the shiny CGI to enjoy the shiny Robert Downey, Jr. I felt like all the amusing moments were in the trailer.
I'm a total Doyle fan - like, to nitpicking levels of geekery. And I loved the movie. It was fantastic. The only thing they left out was the cocaine habit, but they touched on the effects without actually mentioning the drugs. And the female characters who are only mentioned - Mary and "that woman" - become fleshed-out characters, but that's to be expected from stories written by a man, for a man, in a man's age.
