Seconded. I used www.yelp.com a lot when I was in SF, and they were great to find a hair salon... it looks like there's a NYC one, too, and there are repair shop reviews on it.
Just looked up two places in the area (relatively). Thanks for the yelp suggestion: I'd never heard of it and it seems like a cool site. I'm going to give these two places a call and see what they say.
