Ellen Kushner wins at all things. I jumped into Riverside 'verse into what is (chronologically, not publishing wise) the third book, The Fall of the Kings. Still the only book to make me hyperventilate so hard my mom freaked out. I really need to re-read TFotK now (and Swordspoint), given that so many of the references to certain families will make more sense now.

Swordspoint is made of squee and flail, given that you get both top-of-his-game!Richard and drugged-out-not!noble-student!Alec and their disfunctional love. Yay for you getting into these books!

Tehir luv is so adorably fu<%ed up. Even in PotS. Have you read it? Cause *points and flails and so many good bits and have I mentioned I love Alec because I really do and Richard is *flailyflaily* and KATE oh Kate and Marcus and YES. I need to figure out chronologically etc what order the books go in because I loved it.

YAY FOR SOMEONE KNOWING WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!

Swordspoint comes first, long before Alec becomes mad duke. The Fall of the Kings is last, I think about twenty-five or thirty years after Privilege, when Katherine is middle-aged and the Black Rose's baby is an adult woman. I don't remember where the stories fall.

I've figured out Swordspoint is first, then---

I'm so confused!

If you liked Privilege for the crazy bisexual hijinks and for the Alec-Richard dynamic, you'll positively adore Swordspoint.

I think it was just when Kate got kissed by the Black Rose---

........is it me, or does it feel almost like we're ALL chattering about Tyrian and Stella and Fabian and the hunting cats were SO TERRIFYING!

That said, it was more just the characters. I always read for the characters (ie, why I love the Belgariad so and can't quite, um, get into LoTR, sorry!) and the characters here, even the minor ones are just handled with this lovely deft hand.s
