Day 6 "Where are they now?"

Nov 06, 2012 12:33

I've always wondered what Daniel did with the flower that fell out of Vala's hair when she was abducted in Memento Mori. Did he give it back to Vala after SG-1 found her, or did he keep it? WHERE IS THAT FLOWER NOW?

I also wondered if the flower had been meant to be a real or silk, so I asked the guy who directed the episode:

I think the flower was fake. Actually, I think the flower was part of Vala's sparkly hair clip collection, which I have always believed Daniel bought for her (by this point, she might have swiped his credit card and ordered things online, but she started wearing sparkly things almost immediately after coming to Earth... where did she get them...?)

And Daniel kept it, absolutely. Not in an overly sentimental way, but he wouldn't have thrown it out. I'll bet it ended up in his office somwhere, maybe in an ancient vase or a box of rocks with random carvings. And Vala would be looking for something, years later, and find it, just as Daniel came back into the office (now their office) and Vala would say "Remember that time I lost my memory?" and Daniel would answer "Yes, and I remember that I was the only thing you could remember". And Vala would add "Well, darling, you're rather unforgetable." And they'd stand there kissing until someone (either Jack or one of their kids) came wandering in to interrupt them.

I think Sam bought her the girlie stuff. <3 (Yeah, I 'ship Sam/Vala, BUT they became good friends & shopping buddies later so I totally love their friendship, too.)

"Yes, and I remember that I was the only thing you could remember".

Daniel dashed out of the resturant, dread eating at his gut. He already knows she's gone but he desperatly wants to be wrong. He sees the flower, tangible proof that he's too late, proof that she's gone, snatched right out of his hands. He is almost dizzy as he picks up the fabric blossom; a cheap, pretty thing Vala plucked from the artificial flower arrangement that once collected dust in the VIP rooms. The scent of her shampoo wafts up. He clenches his fist around it. Blind determination replaces panic. They have to find her ( ... )

Wow! First, I can't believe you wrote this in one evening. Second, it's amazing. Everything. His panic, his worry, right there at the forefront. And I love the end, how the flower bounces back, reminding him of Vala. Great, great fic. :D

Thanks. I really enjoyed reading everyone else's thoughts and as I did, my own slowly formed.

If you need any proof that I wrote it on the spot, just count all the spelling errors. Gah, I sooo need spell check in everything I do.

In the end, I tend to think that while Vala was missing that Daniel did not take the flower out and stare at it, having already internalized what it represented to him. Strictly looking at a time line, I don't think Daniel spent much time in his room and only would have returned when he was too weary to do anything but collapse and then when he woke up he would get right back to searching for answers.

So I think it would stay untouched in that box until somewhere down the road and then for whatever reason, yeah, he would take it out and relive what it means to him, perhaps only then understanding the significance he'd already unconsciously given to it.

Ooooh, I like that thought!

Love your ficlet too! I'm going to be like Campy--now I want lots of flower fic! (Flower power?) I'm greedy like that. ;)

I've read this several times now, amazed at the perfection, the simple beauty of the words that say so much. ~b
