I thought I'd attempt to spark a wee bit of discussion.  There may be other venues more likely to get a response (discussion forums and the like), but...I don't know of them.  So I thought I'd try here.  We'll see how it goes.

Great points. I think we have a winner. It shows that Vala is probably growing a little by not exactly lying outright to either party, but possibly bending/exaggerating the truth (to Daniel like you said) in order to save face or protect herself. I like the idea of stepmom-Adria being a good person, but because she's a stepmother, there's always going to be conflicting feelings wrapped up with that for Vala. And if you're right and she helped to raise Vala even a little (like Jacek implies), then little Adria can't really read a lie. Stepmother-Adria was still a mother.
