"What is the capital of Turkey?" Sophie read of one of the Trivial Pursuit cards, as she, Tegan and Riley were home on a Saturday night. Don't even ask how they ended up playing that, it would be an never ending story of silliness.
"Ankara." Riley tells her, smiling fleetingly to her before going back to picking out the red skittles from the blue glass bowl in front of her. As soon as the fruit flavored sweets had been put on the table she had been enchanted with them and set on removing every last red skittle from the rest of the colors. You might say her mind was more on the sweets than Tegan and Sophie or even the game she had suggested they play.
"That's...correct. Were you good at geography or something in school? It's just not something you'd expect from a teenager, no offense." Sophie told her, as she returned the card to the box of questions at her side and then grabbed a handful of popcorn from the wooden bowl situated between her and Tegan who had be unusually quite since she got there. She had been kinda shy and less outgoing than before. I mean, she knew that Tegan was actually a bookworm and preferred a book to a party but she was really withdrawn lately.
"Not really. But I've been there. My father took me there with him on a business trip after i had this kinda nasty break-up." Riley told them, as she gave a hint of a smile probably meant for some memory from the trip and continued to pick out the red skittles. The truth is she had gone alone on a kinda job. It had been boat loads of fun and she had made some friends over a slit throat.
"Oh. Okay. I have just got to ask you this. Why are you only taking the red ones?" Sophie finally asked her, and nodded at the bowl with her head. There was a ever-growing pile of the red skittles right in front of Riley and she hadn't touched them yet. She seemed to be compelled to pick them all out before she touched them. It was just getting a little eerie.
"Because I only like the red ones, obviously. Is that a problem?" Riley told her, as she stopped picking them out and looked at Sophie. Her eyes were kind and normal, as they always were but there was something just under the surface that Sophie hadn't quite grasped yet but it was something scary and unsettling.
"No, not at all. I was just wondering about it. You know what, I'll be right back. I need to make a phone call." Sophie told them, before she stood up from her chair and walked towards her bedroom where she had thrown her bag on her bed that held her cell-phone. Really, she had just needed an excuse to get away for a bit. There was a strange vibe in the air and it was making the hair on the back of her neck stand up.
"So, how did you two meet?" Tegan suddenly asked Riley out of the blue when Riley had gone back to picking out the red skittles. She looked up at Tegan and for a second she could have sworn that Riley's eyes went all cat like on her. It must have been a trick of the light though, because that is just impossible. Shape shifters and all that nonsense is just wives tales.
"She kinda saved my life, that's all. Do you want some skittles?" Riley asked her, as she grinned at Tegan and pushed the blue glass bowl towards her. She looked from Tegan to the bowl, expecting her to take some. She kinda had that look of pride that a cat has when he brings his owner a dead mouse or bird, they think they've done good and should be petted for it.
"Umh, no thanks. I'm more of a M & M's kinda girl. So, she knows how to save a life, huh?" Tegan mused to herself, as she pushed the bowl back towards Riley and Riley looked back from her to the bowl with a slight pout before pulling it back to her.
"Okay. More for me then. Yay to that. And that sounds like a title to a song." Riley told her, as she stopped her picking out of the red skittles and just stared out into the apartment that was getting darker and darker as the time got closer to midnight and she got one of those smiles she had gotten earlier when she was probably thinking about her trip with her Dad to Turkey.
"What?" Tegan asked her, finally after a short silence which was kinda starting to freak Tegan out a bit with the blond teenager just smiling into the night and making the hairs on her arms raise a bit and she so did not like that feeling at all. It's like watching a psychology thriller and the end is near with the shocking reveal. God, she's creeping herself out with these thoughts.
"How to save a life. It's a song. An ex of mine was obsessed with the song. She sometimes put it on repeat and it was driving me completely insane." Riley told her, as she finished picking all the red skittles out and started to eat them with great pleasure. Obviously she likes her sweets. Maybe a little too much, since she had put her sock clad feet up on the table and almost purred with pleasure when she popped one skittle after the other into her mouth.
"Oh, I didn't know that. Shows how much I follow music. Was this the ex who resulted in your trip to Turkey?" Tegan asked her, as she watched Riley practically maul the strawberry flavored sweets now before she looked up and saw Tegan.
"No. That was before her. But I did go to France. That was a great trip." Riley told her grinning, as she threw her last red skittle in the air and it landed in her mouth. Wow, always when Tegan had tried that she missed and got a very messy floor or it bounced of her teeth.
"Do you always go to a foreign country after you've broken up with someone?" Tegan asked her, as she saw Riley reach out for the red glass bowl that contained the little touched Gummi Bears and starting to pick out the the red ones like she did with the skittles.
"No. Not really, it just happened sometimes. Not all the time. Seriously." Riley told her, but something told Tegan that was exactly what happened which said a little about her background. That and her clothes. Well, the ones she showed up in but she had gotten some clothes on loan from Sophie since she didn't have any money or clothes with her and that was was kinda suspicious. Who takes a vacation with no money or clothes? Someone on the run, that's who.
"Okay, I'm back. Did I miss something?" Sophie asked, as she looked between the two women. She hadn't really called anyone, she had just sat on her bed and stared out the window for a bit. She had kind of heard them talk but she had been too far away to hear what they really were talking about.
"We were just talking about How to save a life." Tegan told her, a bit of her welsh accent slipping in which she was usually very careful in not letting happen and only happened when she was somewhat uncomfortable, drunk or stressed out.
"The song. Not actually about how to save a life." Riley told her, without looking up from picking out the red Gummi Bears and Sophie was not even going to ask about that. Riley seemed to have this affinity for red food. You should see her devour strawberries, it's insane to watch. Not creepy or that she's a slob, it's just kinda enchanting and makes you feel like you should look away as if you invading a private moment. Which is nuts, because the girl was only eating a damn fruit!!!
"Oh, okay. So, who's turn is it now?" Sophie asked, and both women just shrugged their shoulders. Something told her that they're minds were no longer directed at the game. Riley was busy with her picking of red Gummi Bears and Tegan was watching her with an interested glint in her eyes.
When the clock was turning 2 A.M and everything red and sweet had been finished, Tegan got ready to go and Sophie got ready for bed. But Riley was lounging on the couch that was in front of the Tv and watching some made for Tv movie that looked overly sappy.
Tegan was looking for her flat key which she could have sworn was in her bag but she just couldn't seem to find the damn thing. It was a hard thing to loose, it had a little damn stuffed elephant as a key chain. But it still went clattering to the floor as she rummaged around in her bag and grumbled about how she needed to reorganize her bag.
Riley was there in a flash and handed her the keys with a big smile. "Here you go." Riley told her and Tegan got a total Déjà vu of Riley saying that to her before, just outside and then blank. But she had never met Riley before that morning when she cut her hair. She hadn't dropped her bag before in front of Riley, so it didn't make any sense.
"Thanks. Good night. I'll see you around. Bye." Tegan told her and went on her way, and left behind the still smiling Riley with her glowing cat eyes in the dark.
"Good night, Tegan." Riley whispered to herself, as she licked her lips and turned around to turn of the Tv and go out for a snack.
