Who knew that a bare brush of the hands would leave me squeeing incoherently, like a 12 year old?
Green Rose has a certain emotional restraint, almost Victorian in its repression, in the scenes between Jung-Hyun and Soo-Ah, two lovers reuniting after three years apart, but with neither being able (for plot and emotional reasons) to openly acknowledge the other that just…
Just…
OK. I am incoherent again.
The almost silent scene in question occurs some time in episode 20.
Soo-Ah is visiting her still-out-of-it father in the summer house and meets Jung-Hyun there (as JH is the one who arranged for him to be moved).
They are quiet with each other, within their self-imposed boundaries. And then after she visits her Dad, JH’s friend mentions that someone who was helping JH died today so he might not show it, but he is devastated and can she (Soo-Ah) comfort him?
A tall order you’d think, considering that after his oblique revelation he is JH, they’ve reverted into pretend-roles of being strangers (on purpose) and any emotional demonstration on her part will likely either meet with walls or break him. In order to help him focus, she has to maintain her distance.
I really love, btw, Soo-Ah’s attitude throughout, which is basically ‘the love of my love came back from the dead after three years. I can see he is totally messed up, so I won’t push, and will wait a little, as the fact that he’s alive is huge happiness’ YAY. (I love her little comment to his friend that she has no idea how bad it must have been for JH, but she can imagine it must have been really horrible because he cannot come to her). I also love (about the artificial distance) how yes, there is a huge element of protecting Soo-Ah there, and for Jung-Hyun it’s also because he has to fixate on his goal of clearing his name and if he lets go emotionally, from the tight control, he just might fall apart, but also there is a sense that it’s hard for him to get close again, however much he loves her, because he’s had a horrible time and is messed up. Small steps isn’t just all he allows himself, it’s all he is capable of.
But OMG OMG OMG.
She walks out and he is outside and by unspoken consent they start walking up hill, to a hilltop with the view of the sea, and they are completely silent and they stand there, side by side, looking out, close but not touching. And somehow it’s incredibly peaceful, and her steady presence is a total reassurance, you can see him relax (he needs a good certainty in life, poor guy).
And then she very quietly and slowly reaches her hand toward his and lightly takes it. Very very lightly. Their fingers are barely brushing. And she doesn’t look at him and he doesn’t look at her but OMG his face, and you can see him swallow, hard, and it’s so awesome and aaaaaaaah!
And then she lets go, after a short bit, and turns away and heads down, calmly and not running or turning back or anything. And he is totally frozen and is just turned around, staring and staring at her and OMG OMG OMG.
And then she is driving back, and she is holding that hand to her face. EEEEE!
And he is still standing there on that hilltop, frozen.
OMG.
And I do think it’s a major break-through and further, seemingly small ones follow.
It’s like they can’t really control it.
I love the call he makes her at night, and it’s all business, all about inviting suspects to the summer house, but then once it’s done, he very softly tells her ‘You’ve lost weight” and OMG OMG her face, because it’s the most overt admission he’s made he is JH yet, and it’s his first step and it’s just…GUUUUUUH.
And she responds that he’s lost even more weight and it’s bad.
Seriously, people. Their faces. It’s such a little conversational comment but it’s so huge.
And he tells her *dies* “As long as you are all right, I am all right.”
*dies*
And she repeats it back.
*dies*
OMG.
And then they hang up.
The mystery is still really good as I have no idea who did it, how and why (I am clear on at least one of the whos but the rest is mysterious).
And Go Soo has clearly made an art out of looking gorgeous while broodingly staring out of windows, while wearing suits. I might or might not have said “You are totally hot” out loud on one of those occasions.
OK, oh no.
Another kdrama entered contention for my next big drama watch. Which Star Are You From with Kim Rae Won (the kissing fiend, all his dramas have a lot of kissing, LOL). Argh. At this rate, I am going to go a bit nutty trying to narrow it down. Dramas are evil for a person with a short attention span and grabby tendencies, like me. I keep spinning ‘this one next, or this one, or that one?’
I’ll make myself wait though. This one is in my Top 10 ‘to watch soon’ kdramas though.
But these pictures make it hard:
So far, the Ten ‘soonest watched’ kdramas are (order fluid and changes every day :D)
1 Lovers
2 Save the Last Dance for Me
3 Hello My Teacher
4 Spring Waltz
5 Snow White
6 Smile Again
7 Stained Glass
8 Which Star Are You From
9 Hello Miss
10 Witch Yoo Hee
When you throw in at least four wuxia dramas I am expecting, my earning to watch Karei-Naru Ichizoku, and dramas I haven’t finished yet? *sigh*
Plus considering I want to rewatch dramas like My Girl, Goong, or Pride.
I think I am going to do drastic cutting. If I am not in love with a drama, I’ll stop. Usually, I like to finish, but it’s getting a bit insane. Love Story in Harvard, My Love Patzzi, What Happened in Bali, Magicians of Love, Loveholic, Long Vacation, Kimi Wa Petto: Goooood-bye. (Magic Ring, probably good-bye too). You are all enjoyable and I’ll finish you some day but I simply cannot keep up and I don’t adore you. I am only keeping Nobuta off that list because I have half an ep to go.
Liar Game? I’ll wait until you are complete. I am not starting any currently subbing drama however tempting, either, if I haven’t started it yet (thus Thank You, the Devil, the Kid from Heaven, My Lucky Star, Corner with Love, Que Sera Sera, Bambino, all get to wait). Not until I clear the rest of the list. I will also hold off the awesomeness of The Outsiders until I get the rest of the subs.
Thus, my in progress dramas are limited to Green Rose (4 eps left), Sang-Doo (9 eps left), Butterfly Lovers (which I actually might save for when it’s more subbed as only first 3 are subbed), Beautiful Life (4 eps left), Taiyou No Kisetsu (5 eps left), Witch Yoo Hee (a lot of eps left), Hana Kimi (9 eps left) and Smiling Pasta (12 eps left). (I am leaving Hello Miss out because I am only on ep 1, so I am going to hold off and watch it properly once my backlog clears up). Much more manageable.
There is also ‘If in Love…like them’ but it’s only 4 eps. I might hold off that one anyway, as hate watching stuff on youtube.
And ProDai will be the only currently airing drama I can follow. YES.
I can manage. I think. With this backlog, I’ll be clearing it in a week or two, even if I start a new drama once I finish GR.
