Mandarin is the official chinese language, a big percentage of chinese speak it, but not all do since there are a LOT of other chinese languages (fookien, shanghainese etc). Cantonese is spoken in Hong Kong, where the accent is more hard and fast, while Mandarin is more less accentuated. this is from someone who has sort of developed an ear for differentiating the 2 languages even i don't speak either one. i've just seen too many chinese movies, and being filipino, there's always a slight 10% that one would have chinese descendants.
in taiwan though, they speak mandarin. but they also have taiwanese - a native language which has a different pronounciation. vic knows to speak this, i believe this is one of the reasons he had a difficult time speaking proper mandarin, until lately.
and f4 trivia: vanness (mei zhou in MG) doesnt read nor write in chinese, he speaks mandarin but had to go to train for it, and reads it in romanji , not in characters. ;)

Interesting! (I obviously can't hear any difference. The same with Bolly movies where native speakers are always 'so and so did a spot on Punjabi speech' but it all sounds the same to me. Really wish I knew a dozen languages).
