Upcoming kdramas - the fun, the less fun and the whaaaaa?

Sep 28, 2012 22:05

Seeing that a bunch of new kdramas are either about to start or have been announced, I thought it would be fun to do one of those periodical 'here is what's coming up, and here are my 2 cents' posts.

Below are all the upcoming kdramas that are on my radar, alphabetical order, and what I think about them.

Thoughts thoughts thoughts )

city conquest, upcoming kdramas, iris 2, i miss you, dorama casting, yawang, horse healer, king of dramas, dorama list, secret agent war, jeon woo chi, that winter the wind blows, the great seer

joo won in a drama? SOLD.
so great to hear he's finally doing something toned down on angst.
now, if only they can find someone who can match him. No noona please, I can't do another one of those.

That Winter, The Wind Blows - What a lovely title. Looking forward to this one. Jo In Sung, Song Hye Kyo Fighting!

And as for Iris 2 - I'm staying clear of the train wreak.

Yeah, I like noona romance now and then but the way pretty much every drama is one nowadays is tiresome. Hmmmm, maybe Kim So Eun opposite him? I love her and it would be age appropriate. (I'd be fine with Jung So Min too, but she might be a bit too young to play a spy).

I am so going to enjoy having Jo In Sung making me cry....

Yet, my big big obstacle is Cha Tae Hyun, the leading man. I know this places me in the minority of one, but I don't like him. I think he's dreadfully unattractive and nothing I've seen him in has ever convinced me he has on-screen charisma to overcome the instinctive dislike I get. I am going to give it a chance but honestly - I wish it was almost anyone else.

I am in that minority with you. I find CTH to be extremely unattractive and while I've liked some of his film projects, I've never liked him. He just doesn't have that on-screen charisma. If an actor isn't physically attractive (to me), they at least have to have that charisma and CTH just. . .doesn't. It's a shame, too. When they made Jeon Woo Chi into a film, it was a favorite - very fun.

I keep hoping CTH will find something else more exciting to do and we get a replacement leading man. About the only kdrama leads I'd be less excited about would be Ryu Shi Won or Kim Su Hyun.

For a while I thought he had found something. Wasn't he doing stage work? In the movie the character was played brilliantly by Kang Dong-Won. I'd love to see him in the role again, but a) he's currently in the army and b) he hasn't done a drama since 2004.

You never know - JWS came back to dramas and he hasn't done one since the 1990s I think.

But honestly, I'll settle for anyone but CTH.

It's funny how different our drama tastes are, and yet when the shows come out, I end up agreeing with most of your assessments. The show that I am most excited about is the one you're most blase about (King of Dramas), and your most anticipated sounds cringeworthy to me (That Winter, the Wind Blows). I can't wait to see how it all shakes down, and expand my drama tastes with you! Or at least, follow along with the shows that I'm not watching via your livejournal :).

I love my screwed up dark angsty melos and am not a big romcom fan which pretty much puts me into English-lang fandom minority :)

I am more of a cast/writer person than I am a plot one - i.e. if I like the cast and writer, the plot is immaterial because most kdramas have insane plots :) That's in large part why Wind makes me excited - the cast and actors are top-notch and KoD makes me bored - I am indifferent to the cast and unfamiliar with the writer.

Hehe, that means you get to have an awesome blog that exposes us Eng-lang fans to less blogged-about shows!

I'm actually pretty actor/writer driven as well--perhaps more actor driven than writer driven, though, since there are some actors I just trust to choose interesting projects (case in point: Song Joong Ki & Moon Chae Won in Nice Guy, which I am loving in spite of wanting to shank Jae Hee and smack Maru until he realizes that he needs to GET OVER HER ALREADY OMFG). I thought Jung Ryu Won was magnificent in History of the Salaryman, even though I didn't finish the drama, so I'm super excited for KoD. Also, showbiz dramas are a weakness of mine.

I did love Padam Padam, so I'm not totally opposed to Wind, I just haven't seen either actors' work before and the plot seems a little over the top to me. But who knows? Maybe I'll love it :).

I'm most excited about Jeon Woo Chi, because... well, JEON WOO CHI! Loved the movie and the premise, and the minute they casted Cha Tae Hyun, I was all set. I think he's hilarious and somehow I've just always liked him from what I've seen on variety shows and whatnot. You really need to search up an old Yashimmanman episode he was on with Kim Sun Ah and Rain - they were a riot ( ... )

She does, but still - same type of role! I mean, her last dramas were Secret Garden and King 2 Hearts, and another butt-kicking, physically tough female role would just be overkill. If they were going for a noona-dongsaeng romance, I could think of a million other potential actresses who've been paired up with younger men in the past and worked out great - Park Jin Hee, for one! She was awesome with Kim Bum, and she can act tough.

I am with hanjae - it would be the ultimate typecast - that would be her third noona romance as a tough fighter. That's a bit much :P

All I registered from that is that they're finally making the Jeon Woo Chi series. (Which will get lost in the time travel dramas even though, like Faith, it's been in the works for years.)

The one thing about JWC is that the plot will be somewhat different from the movie (no modern day scenes). Tbh, the plot sounds like a lost wuxia so I'd be in, if I can get past the male lead.
