Musings on the nature of beefcake and the TPTB

Nov 15, 2005 14:37

Batten down the hatches, here comes hurricane Dark Angel. I am afraid I found that I like Dark Angel so I am afraid the next couple of weeks might be a bit DA heavy on my lj. It must be the name Logan. I can't resist ( Read more... )

And on Battlestar Galactica, TPTB know that women are a lot more likely to find Lee appealing (hence the towel) than they are Tigh (the latter's disturbing tendency to flash his arms and have on-screen sex notwithstanding).

You know, after I read this, I thought of Tigh in a towel. What a scary image. I actually have this crazy fondness for the character, but I don't have any need to see him shirtless.

And on Veronica Mars, I always thought the fandom love of Logan caught TPTB by surprise. Duncan was the one who was supposed to be the pin-up, the one viewers wanted to be with Veronica, what not. But something else happened entirely. Logan wasn't even supposed to be ANY kind of a pin-up or love interest in the beginning.Yep. And that's why I'll never apologize for my Logan lust/obsession/crush. I like pulling for the underdog, which is what JD was. Something about that whole scenario makes me happy-I think because it shows that human beings aren't predictable, assumptions are often wrong, and that there are many types of people that ( ... )

Tigh in a towel

Now I am blind. I like Tigh too, but only fully clothed.

Re: Logan. Yes, he's definitely an underdog and I love the boy for it.

Heh. Sorry, I didn't mean to burn your eyes. Here's some pretty beefcake to help soothe them.

The really interesting thing is when the TPTB get blindsided.

I agree. And great examples. While I STILL don't quite get the whole mania of Orlando Bloom, I have to giggle over the Logan phenom. I would have loved to have seen the executives expressions when they realized that Logan was the sex symbol of the show, because...hee! Like Rob Thomas himself said, JD is a good-looking guy, but he's no model. And while Teddy is cute, he doesn't have a quarter of the beefcake potential Jason has.

Exactly. The boy redefines bland.

BP aside, Jason Dohring alone proves that there is much to be said for natural charisma! Some people have it, and others (*cough*Teddy Dunn*cough*) just don't.

And then you have pretty-boy Jamie Bamber who proves eminently that he is in no way just a pretty face.

I think I agree whole-heartedly with missmarch who wrote up there: "Anyway, simple beefcake bores me. I generally only like hot guys if the character is interesting and the actor is capable."

If they're vapid or empty, or something else similar, they do almost nothing for me. I do like my substance. ;)

Exactly. Pretty to look at and nothing more is fun for about 5 minutes. After that? Yawn.

I think the love of Logan caught the tv execs by surprise by I by no means think it caught Rob and the writers by surprise. I think Logan was a favourite early on. See his character in the pilot. OPJ. But, as the season progresses, Logan becomes a (not only) fan but writer favourite--his lines, his scenes get so much more punch, more attention, because of the charisma of the actor/character.

That's true. I liked that the writers decided to play to their strengths...

I don't know about meat, but if Logan was a fruit, he'd be a pineapple-prickly on the outside, sweet and sour on the inside. :P

Also echoing above, the thing I like about Logan is he becomes more attractive the more we see of his character. He wouldn't even have to be good looking because he's charasmatic enough to pull off being fascinating without it. Whereas Duncan is okay looking, but he's more of a pretty face without much behind it.

My beefcake preferences are such that it certainly helps for a show to have serving of it, but if the character isn't interesting to begin with, it wouldn't be enough for me to watch.

Also, if you need any topless Logan icons, I have a few I can share. :)

Yes please on the icons!

It's Logan's character that made me fall for him. Which is what actually generally grabs me. Good looks are a bonus, but character is a must.

Definitely. Okay, Logan icons...well, louloucn made a series of icons from An Echolls Family Christmas (
here
and here) which include some topless shots of Logan. And I have a few more recent ones from the bedroom scene of Cheatty Cheatty Bang Bang up at my Photobucket folder, which you're welcome to look through. They're all named for who made them so you know who to credit if you take any (I have to do that, or I'd never remember :P).
