DTMFA in action

Mar 28, 2011 14:25

So, ep 21 happened, Qing Chuan found out that Four was a manipulative user who was trying to off family members and have her killed and promptly broke up with him.

This is probably the sole time I've seen DTMFA in action in a drama. Ever. Drama heroines always put up with a ton of crap from the man they love but not Qing Chuan! I love it! Because ( Read more... )

I was close! Flove Dan Savage -- but haven't read him (or heard his podcast) in a long, long time.

See, I think that was the main difference. It WAS really sad/touching that Four was ready to give up his ambition, dump Jin Zhi and go off to start a quiet life with QC together, but then you contrast it with Eight, who has a totally different way of doing things. Basically, you've got two men who have different approaches:

1. Four would be willing to give up being a prince, his house and property, to be with QC. He thinks that's enough. Being with QC makes him move backwards; I don't think he's conscious of this thought, but he's literally acting like he has to reduce himself to match her.

2. Eight would be willing to give up his life, forget being a prince and everything else, to be with QC. But here's where they differ: he doesn't think it's enough, he wants to constantly better himself so that he's worthy of her. Despite him being a world away in rank and probably better at everything than QC is, being with her motivates him to move forward ( ... )

That is a great write-up about their differences. Eight is just very persistent and positive and Four is not - at least not in relationships. He's a lot more damaged than Eight is (probably due to Consort De).

But the thing is, I think for Four giving up ambition and house was to become a better man - he never lacked ambition or drive - he needed to have that care and self-denial to become a better person. While Eight, with all his flaws of thoughtlessness at the beginning, never had the ruthless ambition that would put throne over all. He doesn't need to give up ambition to be a better person - he's only ambitious for QC's sake not his own (side note - seriously, QC, stop pushing him into dynastic infighting).

And no matter how much QC manages to change Four, I wonder whether she'd be able to change his inherent character.Interesting point. I wonder if once the bloom is off the rose, Four would be fine with giving up everything he worked for, for a woman. He might though (he really commits 100% to everything and he seems to have ( ... )

I think Eight and Four actually had similar results from their family problems. The only reason why Four turned out worse is because of their difference in personalities. Four grew up with Imperial Consort Tong, who reportedly doted on him, but in the end all he could focus on was that his mother didn't care half as much about him as she cared about 14th. The sense of neglect made him feel resentful, and his way of dealing with it is closing himself off, wallowing in self-pity that he has no one to trust and unable to see that there are people who'd care about him if he'd let them. In a way, he's rather selfish; for his own sense of fulfillment, he'd do anything, including burning a brother to death ( ... )

I was dying for you to watch more of this show!

As a viewer I do feel very sad for Four. :( But I was ready to ship Eight/QC again!

When she was pushing Eight to go for the throne I wanted to slap her in the face though!

Yes, I couldn't believe she was pushing him to fight for the throne. Leaving aside that she knows history and it's a bit of a tall order to think she can change it, fighting for the throne is really dangerous and she's mainly doing it as some sort of a channel for her disappointment in Four. Not good, QC, not good.

It seemed like she was making use of Eight to take revenge on Four! And apparently even Eight felt so.

Now you understand how I feel.

Yes, the dysfunctional scenes they have together (more to come in the next few eps) are just so addictive.

And I guess Qing Chuan has never watched time-travel shows before, or learned Rule Number One of time-travel.

I watched the first 2 episodes of this and I do agree it's addicting but I desperately need spoilers before I go on.
First, is there a good reason why Qing Chuan would date the 4th Prince when the 8th is her OTP? I know she supposedly fangirls the 4th Prince but is there anything that happens between her and the 8th that pushes her to stay with the 4th? Or does she sincerely fall for the 4th? That would be problematic for me, I can't buy an OTP that's simply a second choice or like a last resort..

Also, you made the comparison before between Qing Chuan and Makino but I feel like there are not really alike...Makino was headstrong yes and brave but she was also...very kind-hearted? I don't get the same feeling from Qing Chuan. She seems very cold and selfish even.

She's not selfish - she stands up for those bullied/weaker than she - you'll see as the drama develops (it is, after all, longer than 9 ep Hanadan). Yes, she can be ruthless and pragmatic but she's much older than Makino and in a much more extreme environment - whatever else went on in Hanadan, Makino was never in danger of being beheaded or starving to death.

Re: Four v. Eight. It's pretty much like in Hanadan - she crushes on Four i.e. Rui because he was kind to her. And it takes her a while to notice/warm up/realize she loves him vis-a-vis Eight i.e. Domyouji. It's pretty much the same dynamic. Just like Makino would be, she's ecstatic when Four returns her affections but realizes this isn't really for her (and ultimately her feelings for Four were infatuation and not love). Whether this is your thing or not depends on you.

but realizes this isn't really for her

Does she realize that he's not for her or does she just find out he's a murderer?

I never liked Rui (it's a bit ironic that I actually have a Chinese friend named Rui who I liked but anyway xD). I never liked Rui in Handan but at least he wasn't a plotting murderer so that when Makino stopped liking him and fell for Domyouji I had a strong feeling that their love is real and they are meant for each other. So I don't know how much I can sympathize with "4th is evil, well but I still have the 8th!". I'm just assuming it's like that from glimpsing at this post about their break-up, maybe it's not exactly like that?

Ummm, isn't it the same thing? She thought she'd like to marry the guy, then found out he wasn't really what she wanted in a SO (because he's manipulaive and murderous) and decided not to ( ... )
