lol, i have just come off the dramabeans website and i did wonder why she was already bashing it. i am not the biggest fan on either lead, but it does seem a bit preemptive at the moment to write it off right now.
on the other hand, i think both of you like SKK, and Will it Snow at Christmas, and also Pick the Stars. So, all is not lost! :)
Yes, but where dramabeans and I part ways is that I may not like a drama/actor and still not boggle at that drama/actor's popularity/allow that it can be popular not just because people don't have taste. My taste = objective arbiter of goodness.
well, where dramabeans and i differ is that i don't overly analyse every single drama i watch or don't watch. Like Legend, Chuno and Mary stayed out all night. I don't think i'll ever watch these, but i don't need to disparage people who do, or go on about whatever plot, directing, music deficiences that might exist. i know what i like, and i like what i watch. i dont assume that just cos people dont agree with me, that there must be something deficient about them.
It's definitely too early to write off My Princess yet, but I think I'm going to be wary about it anyway. Song Seung Heon and Kim Tae Hee's average acting skills aside, the chaebol/princess storyline makes me wince; is there nothing in Korea other than chaebols? LOL if people believed their dramas, you'd think there's no such thing as the working class man. I should go to Korea and find my own chaebol husband too.
But to be fair, Writer Kim Eun Sook might turn this around; I still remember how everyone (including me) reacted when the news first came out that Secret Garden was going to be about a BODY SWAP. And it looks like the awesome Park Ye Jin's cut her hair short to play a bitchy second female lead, and it reminds me of her biting character in What Happened in Bali. So that could be promising.
I like working class men (Gloria!) but the prevalence of chaebols is pretty amusing. I think your chaebol husband idea is great.
The thing is, I can totally get why MP won't be someone's thing (don't like writer/premise/actors/combo of the former) but there is a difference between that and writing it off as a horrible flop. I mean, I don't like Style, from actors to writing, but I never assumed it flopped, it became a hit, and I never assumed it was because it was idiotic, I just continued to think I have different tastes and would rather eat glass than watch it. The article didn't really make a distinction.
Man, Style. I never understood how it could possibly become a hit either. If someone tried to force me to watch it, I would be right there alongside you, eating glass in protest. I'm okay with Kim Hye Soo, but that's the only thing with that drama that I'm okay with; everything else about it rubbed me the wrong way.
The danger with writing something off as a flop before it has even aired is that it might come back to bite one in the ass, LOL. I haven't written anything off, but have looked at a number of things with zero to negative expectations and have been forced to recind all earlier statements, so I suppose you can hope that GF will be forced to eat her words? I've noticed that GF is blunter and makes quicker assumptions than JB does.
I try not to read DB recaps/opinion pieces so I only see them if they are above cut - I'll have to take your word on DB v GF. I have issues with that site, despite the fact that they both write well. Also, I have never gotten over DB spoiling the ending of IRIS outside cut right after it aired before it was a day old - WTF.
i'm just gonna roll with it, since i'm still liking My Princess right now. i love some of the choices that javabeans recommends like Return of Iljimae, but some just sail riGHT OVer my head (YAB would be one of the prime examples). Same with your love of Chuno. Wasn't even tempted to watch it (didn't help that the leads are not my cuppa tea) but hey, what's the fun if we were all EXACTLY the same right?

Which is why I have to stop reading about all your OTPs!! I've watched a LOT more dramas recently cause you make me fall in love with your OTPs (read Minwoo-Miju. I had no intentions of watching either Gloria nor Giant and still don't want to, except you keep tempting me..... I might yet succumb to Gloria)
Remember Secret Garden was written off pretty much in the same way not long ago.... and see what happens now? SSH and KTH are certainly no match to HB and HJW but the mild sweetness of the former two plus a good script specifically written for them may pull it off.
Exactly. See On Air. I normally dislike both leading ladies in that but they worked for me in On Air. The only time I really liked Kim Jung Eun was in Lovers. I think this writer knows how to tailor material.
This is called biaseness. I read her article yesterday and this was the first time I thought it was mediocre not because of the writing but as I said because her biaseness. Look at her articles on "actors" like LMH, KHJect... I mean even way before their projects aire they get bunch of raves. Especially when they are not so "great" sometimes pretty mediocre and their shows stink. Song Seung Hyun is not the best actor in the town but he is not so bad sometimes he is very good in his movies. I am not a Kim Tae Hae fan(I like her brother better) and I have not yet watched a lot of her shows and I liked Kim So Yeon better in Iris but she had her moment in the drama too
I think every blog writer is entitled to be biased (goodness knows there are plenty of actors I don't like) but you have to keep a rational head about you in evaluating drama's chances. I happen not to like e.g. Ryu Shiwon or Gu Hye Sun but I would never assume drama starring them opposite each other with a well-known writer of hits at the helm would flop or be awful. It may not be my thing because I don't care for the actors, but it would probably do very well.
I think KTH is not a great actress but she picks her roles well and has great chemistry with her costars. SSH can be very good in the right role. More importantly, I see nothing which indicates two big Hallyu stars in a drama with a famous writer and a fairly typical/successful romantic plot = trainwreck flop.
