Ah, the rules of K-drama land. KJW is still in "secondary guy" land. He's raising up the ladder to "leading man" status quickly, but he's still a secondary male lead. He had supporting roles in three success dramas in '07 and '08. And he was the secondary lead in Bad Guy, which lacked in the ratings. If Bad Guy had done better in the ratings, KJW would most likely be the lead in a drama, but since it didn't, he's not. If Mary does well, you can beat KJW's next drama role will be as a lead.

I'm actually really looking forward to this show now, because of the fact that KJW is such a great actor. I think he and MGY will be on fire together. Finally a love triangle I can get behind - they've been engaged since childhood. I like JGS, I love MGY, and I'm digging KJW, so. . .yeah. The only thing: MGY and KJW seem to be stronger actors than JGS - so, that could be a problem.

That's the biggest hurdle for me. It's going to be Hong Gil Dong mark 2 where poor Jang Geun Seok basically disappeared into the wallpaper whenever he had to share the screen with Kang Ji Hwan (it was almost painful to watch the different acting levels). Well, it probably won't be as bad because much as I adore KJW he is not (yet) as good as Kang Ji Hwan, but at least in Hong Gil Dong, JGS wasn't the main character/romantic lead ( ... )

Something I've noticed about JGS - he does better in his films than in his dramas. I think he's always sort of girly and I don't find him attractive at all, but I find he's more manly (not attractive, just more. . .grown up) and a better actor in his films.

I've noticed that in HGD he was stiff and faded into the background. Even Sung Yuri (whose improved a lot, but wasn't the best actress in her early years) outshone him. For You're Beautiful. . .that was more of a crazy script than anything else. The Hong sisters went a bit loopy toward the middle and decided to stay there. He was actually fairly good there, especially in the beginning and toward the end.

I would echo what is said below: I'd give him one more chance. He was a bit of a newbie surrounded by far more talented people in HGD and you dislike the crazyness of YB. But, with this drama: You have the story based on the work of the person who also wrote Full House, you have it being adapted by the writer of Goong, and you have great actors to back him up and maybe even ( ... )

Side note: I would list Kang Ji Hwan in my top ten for Korean actors based on looks and talent.

I would too.

Re: indie band. LOL, yes, as soon as the news he was cast came out, I was sure they'd not keep the role as a punk rocker. Someone less establishment-busting and threatening than JGS is hard to imagine (a pity - I would find a punk rocker a LOT sexier than an indie bad singer). Maybe they should have switched KJW and JGS' characters :P

If nothing else, you know that the female lead will be great, the secondary male lead is someone you like, and the script will be awesome. I totally get what you are saying but casting tends to kill ( ... )

I think you should give JGS one more chance - I mean we all know he was AWFUL in HGD, but his acting was pretty widely praised in YB (I certainly found it satisfactory) and the problem with that drama was that you hated it. So give him one more chance, as the lead in a drama you actually like, before dismissing him utterly.

I actually adore him, though I admit I'm still waiting for that role that I can fully get behind, and am hoping this will be it.

Kim Jae Wook is bonus - he's impossibly pretty and I'm really curious to see his acting after hearing about Bad Guy (I'm still bummed, how it ended, I wanted to watch that drama)

He was OK in YAB but YAB really was an all-around mugging fest - not exactly room for nuance and subtlety, more like a pantomim for grown-ups. Which isn;t my thing at all and if they do the same type of thing in Mary, I am out. As to his doing anything more nuanced - I've seen him in HGD, YB, Doremifasolatido and Baby & Me and in none of those did he impress me.

I don't know - when you add in the factor that I am one of five people out there o doesn't love Mon Geun Young, it just ends up a drama I'd rather skip unless all my flist is raving.

I'm just glad Kim Jae Wook is back so soon. I was really sad how bad the ending of Bad Guy was. I tried but i could not delete the episodes i have because of the pretty.

The problem with Kim Jae Wook is that something about him screams "second lead guy." The kind of second male lead that you end up liking more than the male lead, but the second lead all the same. He just doesn't feel like a male lead (yet ( ... )

He makes me think of LJK circa My Girl so I see what you are saying. Problem is, I am OK with him being a second lead in Bad Guy where first lead is freaking Kim Nam Gil (or if we go back further, Coffee Prince where first lead was Gong Yoo) but in a drama with JGS this throws me like mad because JGS never comes across to me as a lead at all.

l. Re: the femininity, I don't think his disgusting tight pants and the permanently oily long hair helps. Unfortunately, this probably won't change in Mary Goes Out All Night - I just sighed when I read the articles and they described him as a bohemian indie band singer.Yes. One of these days, I will be very amused when he takes on a role with any testosterone and probably faint in shock (and if he pulls it off, I'll probably be impressed). Re: HGD. His haircut was a dead ringer there for a haircut of one of my cousins and all my cousins ( ... )

Oh yeah, LJK! He had incredible charisma and energy though; you couldn't help but notice him, and I spent most of My Girl moaning about how much I'd prefer it if Yoo Rin ended up with LJK instead of LDW. While I've always like Kim Jae Wook, I feel he has a different kind of presence; a very quiet, subtle kind. Maybe if they find him the right lead male character, it'd work out? Unfortunately most kdrama heroes are callous jerks/noisy types, and Kim Jae Wook's just too cool for that ( ... )

I know! I got enough issues from Bad Guy (WTF was that ending do not even start me on it) and there at least I was madly in love with the rest of the cast.
