BSG Ramble...

I am as giddy at the prospect of Battlestar Galactica tomorrow, as it's possible to be.

And this made me think about something in particular about BSG (triggered in part by queenofthorns' marvelous post hereI love Season 4's premiere and I did love season 3, so I clearly don't mind the 'mystical destinies' story-turn (especially since it seems pre-programmed, ( Read more... )

So true. Pretty much all of the main characters are people who weren't really qualified to do what they've been charged with doing, and watching them "step up" as well as fail miserably at times is the best of BSG for my taste. I prefer my mysticism and magic to be ambiguous: drug induced hallucination, or prophecy? The hand of God, or coincidence?

Yeah, I really liked it when we weren't sure if Roslin was seeing things because she was supposed to or hallucinating.

"Part of the reason I love Lee so is it seems he is still not connected to any mythical destiny stuff."

But with his change in attitude there are so many more possibilities.

Bah. I <3 mytharc. I have enough reality in my own life. ;)

Hmm. I DO see what you mean - the days of "how will they get enough water" are well and truly behind us, and in a way that is sad. The characters to me seem just as human as ever, though, and that creates an interesting tension with their epic roles.

I think those who complain (not that you're doing this) that Ron "lost his way" by bringing in the mythology are mistaken, in that he's said from the beginning that he always thought the religious aspects of the show were interesting and important. I think it's more a matter of the truth taking time to reveal.

They do manage to stick in survivalist storylines throughout, which is something I like (like the lack of food in that S3 ep). I enjoy the mytharc just fine but my preference is for nitty-gritty. Still, as long as they don't forget the nitty-gritty entirely, I'll be a satisfied customer, so to speak.

Absolutely!
I hadn't even been able to cognify that but it resonates
with me. The gritty realism that was so...well...gritty
is still there but the feel is different.

We no longer know the pilots who die in battle.
They don't even mention how many they lost.
We don't see the general conditions except when it
suits RDM's political statements. The search for the
destiny has overshadowed the "will they survive"

Simultaneously the cylon "annihilate the humans" has become
"find earth first, omg we're thinking about the final five! hey
we can't seem to find consensus anymore! civil war!"

The cylon search/plan has become perverted and they are
starting to unravel and I think it's being done to
wrap up the destiny/prophecy side of "all of this has happened
before and all of this will happen again".

With so few episodes left I imagine we'll see even more
of the collective existential struggle from both sides.

Thanks for helping me think through it...it had been nagging at me and
I couldn't really put my finger on it.

Thank you for your comment!

I do find the concept of civil war between cylons fascinating...they really are turning into humans, somehow.

Sorry...
you're probably wondering who the heck I am.
I'm friends with elspethsheir, weissman , sabaceanbabe, koalathebear and raisintorte, repr0b8 and used to be a member of Hidden Elysium
under a different name (iynx)- before the drama and Amsie's exit.
So you've been in my sphere of friends for quite a while. For some dumb reason I felt fine with randomly commenting, which normally I don't do.

I just followed the link and liked what your wrote. Not a stalker :)
