It totally makes sense logically, but OMG, the HELLLLL.
It doesn't even make sense to me. I was getting all these messages that CH is seeing GD as something to help him to become a better person. I was getting the messages that CH wants to be a better person and that he values YN too much to even hurt her a little bit. I don't think it was realistic at all because his character development was going the other way. And I am not just saying because I liked this character, I really don't see it all psychologically compute.
It makes sense to me. I am not sure if CH knew Yi Nok was with GD at the time, and I guess he did respect her choice and let her go, if that is the case.
But I never got the sense that CH liked GD or looked up to him, or similar. He respected his ability but he was always very uneasy with him personally as he was such a wild card, and a talented one at that. Also, he got the sense people loved GD and not him, which does not make a beleguered heir to the throne feel good. The drama really was written to show them eventually at loggerheads and irreconcilable (I did an unfortunately prophetic post on it at some point even :P).
CH and GD were different not just personally (very different) but ideologically, socially etc. They never could be anything but uneasy allies at best.
Of course, I thought (silly me) that GD would knock some sense into CH and 'scare him straight' or leave for China or become King instead. Anything but that.

May be the drama media and it's actors were not strong enough to show a complex character development like this (for both HGD and CH). Things like CH taking an arrow for HGD doesn't make sense in this scenario, and other things too, like generally happy rather than "thoughtful" tone of the drama. Why did they confuse us with all these jokes

You know I had to spoiler myself for this, too, now. I don't know. I think I'll like the ending - and by like, I mean cry and a lot and feel satisfied. :P
Gil Dong was really living on borrowed time...
PS I'm glad you're having fun! I can't wait to see your pictures.
The thing is, it was a Hong Sisters drama. With an animated ducks! And wireworks and hip-hopping hookers. So I was expecting a happy ending and while this makes sense, it is totally making me depressed because I did not expect it at all. (Should have, as apparently HGD dies in the original story too).
I think I loved Gil Dong a bit too much :( And poor Yi Nok!
So wait, the thing we see at the beginning of the drama - where HGD kicks ass with his gang all awesome like, do we actually get to see this in the drama? Or is it all political drama happenings and OTP falling in love and then being torn apart and then ...this?
I'm unhappy but I didn't continue watching so wasn't that invested, in the end. Quite a surprise Hong sisters drama ends unhappily!

Hate to butt in, but : no. Someone at soompi suggested that what we saw at the start was the legend of HBD and GD living on. That countless rumors and stories about them would be spread for years afterward.
I'm glad you're having a great time. It sounds awesome. :)
Re: HGD
I have a mini-rant about it at my journal. It's just such a strange and dark ending for a Hong sister drama! But really, the last four or five episodes felt like a totally different drama than what we got at the start. How does it go from ducks flying and talking, from people flying, from 'I lob you's, to everyone dying? It really did feel like two different dramas written by two different sets of people. I didn't mind the angst, but it was just so rushed and dark at the end, wasn't it? Episode twenty-four was just so: bom, bam, blah. . . all but four (seven if you count GD's bro, LN, and EH's dad) are dead. The end
( ... )
Yeah, I get the realism of HGD ending and have made my peace with it (it did turn out very wuxia drama after all: fun in the beginning and depressing at the end) but come on! I don't watch kdramas which have animated ducks for realism.
I loved the characters too much, I think.
Btw, I think I finlly figured out the prologue scene. It has tons of similarities with the scene where HGD takes the palace from mad king (Yi Nok in disguise, dancing troupe, same decor etc etc). So I think it could be the folk legend/retelling of that event.
I don't usually watch wuxia dramas, because they start off all happy and dorky, and then end with most of the cast dying. HGD just got too dark for my tastes - it's the Hong sisters for goodness sake! But, it's still one of my favorites and I am making peace with it. But, the next drama the mains are in must end happily for their characters, I've decided.

Oh, that's a good way to think of it! I believe many people now think that the start sene was some kind of legend that grew from the people who were there during that time. It's really the only thing that makes sense: the man they were fighting against was an idiot/crazy person, everyone was much cooler and with better hair, their fighting skills were beyond impressive, they had a flag, and were much loved by the people - who even had a cheer for them.
