I had read one of the books and liked it, so I tried the show...couldn't make it through one episode :-/ Despite the fact that I do like David Boreanaz and his character was good. Mostly the implausible writing, I guess, put me off.
A lot of people had/have serious issues with the science and law enforcement politics aspect of the show, but I can't possibly picture that bugging you :) Ironically the initial reaction to Bones reminded me a lot of the initial reactions too Moonlight. In the beginning before the characters really came out and started growing on the viewers it was just another procedural and one with wonky science to it. Only after a while it sort of crystalized that it is totally made by the characters and by the fact that it's in general a more character based approach. At least for a procedural.
I feel it still is/feels like a procedural but it's just a lot ... richer in the character developments. Like on a lot of shows like CSI it feels like the character interaction is purely incidental and not much thought goes into it. Yet on Bones you FEEL that the writer concern is all about the characters.
ZOMG, Hodgins and Angela's (the quirkly looking side-OTP) first date was AMAZING. Mostly because it totally wasn't what I expected. You don't mind being spoiled, right?
Basically, a few episodes earlier they revealed that Hodgins is actually filthy rich, like millionaire rich, but nobody at his job knows about it because he doesn't want them to treat him differently. So then he finally asks Angela out and I'm like "OMG, that's when he's gonna reveal to her that he's filthy rich and he'll like shower her with diamonds and take her on a cruise and everything". And instead of taking her anywhere he takes her to a playground and they sit on the swings and talk and he pushes her on the swings and it's actually all weird to describe but so *right* in a way. Or maybe that was just because it was so the opposite of what I expected.

But the whole repressed and woobie part got me hooked. I think I am moving it way up the list now!
