[the thing flinches away--not so much from his sword as from its shadow]

[tries again, slowly, using his sword's shadow this time. without the intention of "hurting" the shadow]

[it keeps shying away for a moment--then tries to make a grab for the sword's shadow]

[tries to pull his sword away now]

[the shadow lets it go, pawing at the air again]
