Title: Pleas & Whimpers
Pairing: HaeMin, implied Kangmin, implied KyuHae
Genre: Romance, slight angst, slight college!AU
Rating: PG-13
Summary: It was their routine every Thursday morning, the bus ride they occasionally shared home together. Maybe it was time to break out of their routine.
A/N: It's been so long since I wrote, and it's been hard. I know this piece is probably mediocre at best, nonetheless it feels great because I finally broke out of my huge writer's block. Hopefully I can write as I did before, but as I said before, it feels good to be writing again. Comments are much <3'd.
Slipping his cell phone back into his right jean pocket, Sungmin plugged the other earphone and threw his bag down on the seat next to him as the bus came to another abrupt stop and a boy holding a skateboard stammered onto the vehicle. Sungmin ignored the buzz, already knowing it was Youngwoon who had texted him, asking him to stay behind and spend time together on the campus.
It was raining pretty heavily outside, the forecast called for continuous rain for the next few days. The boy fumbled his pockets as he casted aside his skateboard aside. Small droplets of water tinkled from the top wheels as the boy flashed a plastic card, his other hand immediately scooping up his board as he trudged towards the back of the bus, past the murmurs from the older ladies complaining about the delay.
Sungmin nodded as he moved over a seat, taking his bag with him, to accommodate the boy and his skateboard, his right hand already poised at his ear as he took out one of his headphones.
"Morning." The boy gave a polite bow as he took an adjacent spot on the royal blue seats of the bus.
“Just like usual, eh?” Sungmin finally broke the silence in their area. It was still early in the morning, the awkward hours after morning rush hour and just before the office lunch hours struck the public transit. “Off to the skate park?”
“Yep. Done your early class?” Sungmin nodded back.
“Why don’t you skip? Shouldn’t you just skip and sleep in or something? I mean it's physics...” The other boy widened his legs, probably at the uncomfortable fact that he was soaking wet. Sungmin automatically shifted over to give him space, he shuddered at the thought of wet, clingy clothes. His friend, on the other hand, still loved the rain. Stained patches of darker blue dotted his track pants as he pushed away strands of dripping wet hair.
“The same could be said about you. Besides, I’m not like you, I attend my classes.” Sungmin replied as he casted another glance at his old friend. “Still taking dance and music courses?”
“Yeah. You should know I don't skip classes I enjoy.” The boy browsed his eyes at Sungmin before redirecting them to the scenery outside. “Finally got rid of the pink umbrella?”
“Yep, and you still refuse to bring an umbrella?”
“Yeah. It wasn’t raining this morning.” The boy chuckled softly before he stretched his arms, which had narrowly missed contact with Sungmin’s head.
The small talk eventually died down when his friend began dozing off, his head periodically falling down before he jerked back up. A smile naturally formed at the site, even the way his mouth hung open whenever he slept hadn’t changed since six years ago. The way he crossed his arm brought back a flurry of memories as Sungmin drowned himself in music, holding onto the reminiscent memories of their past.
Twenty minutes or so passed, passengers flowing into and out of the bustling bus as it made its way across the city. Sungmin closed his eyes and embraced himself in his music, letting the soft notes harmonize, lifting him towards a blissful heaven. He couldn’t deny the strain of waking up in the peak of dawn for his classes.
“Bye Sungmin.” His friend called out as he pressed against the door. Sungmin bolted up and saw a waving hand as the bus began accelerating.
“Wait, sorry! I forgot my stop.” Sungmin lied as he grabbed the handle of his umbrella and charged towards the back set of doors. The driver braked and Sungmin pushed forward with his free hand. “Thanks!”
“Hae…” Sungmin called out from behind him, a black umbrella casting a barrier between the water and him. His friend turned around and their eyes met on the empty street, his skateboard tucked neatly under the crook of his arm.
“Isn’t your house three more stops down?” Donghae paused as his eyes shifted away from the awkward gaze.
“Yeah, but…” Sungmin walked over to his friend and covered the both of them from the gushing rain pounding away at him. He ran a hand towards Donghae, his index and middle finger cradling his cheeks as the tips savoured the contact. He had no idea how much he longed to caress his cheek again, how much he wanted - no needed- to feel his skin once more.
“You can’t. We can’t.” Donghae stammered out, his voice shaky and drowned out by the rainstorm. Donghae slapped his hand away and looked away, refusing to let Sungmin see his tears threatening to escape his eyes.
“Hae, we can. Together we can.” Donghae brought a sleeve and dabbed the corner of his eyes. "Or do you not have feelings for me..."
“That doesn't matter.” Donghae again shrunk away from Sungmin’s touch. “What about Youngwoon-hyung?”
“I like how you considered Youngwoon before Kyuhyun.” Sungmin closed the fresh distance between them. “Hae, they don’t matter to us.”
“What do you mean they don’t matter?” Donghae pushed him away again as his skateboard dropped towards the ground. “Sungmin, we’re both in a relationship, we can’t just-”
The umbrella mimicked the skateboard and collided with the ground, and a split second later Sungmin silenced his protests with a swift kiss, his right hand cradling the back of Donghae’s neck as his left hand held his right cheek in place. Sungmin felt Donghae tighten and struggle, his physical protest weakening by the second as Sungmin deepened his exploration inside his mouth. Sungmin probed his tongue, nipping at his bottom lip and drawing long lazy lines across them. Slowly the barrier fractured and his body became more fluid, assuring the fact that the attraction, no matter how minute, was definitely mutual.
Finally Donghae pushed him off as he dabbed the corner of his mouth with his wet sleeve. The oversized grey hoodie hung limply off his shoulders, his skateboard laid forgotten, the wheels turned upright on the pavement.
They stayed like that, distant and apart. Both of them stealing quick glances at one another until their eyes finally locked midair. Nothing but the mere condensation from cold morning escaping with their breaths, the pair remained silent until one of them broke the seal.
“Hae…” Sungmin felt his hot tears mixed with the cool rain as it trailed down his cheek, leaving an ambiguous creek of water. His pent up hidden emotions, the desires and promises, the suppressed feelings of wanting something more, everything came back and hit him hard, the pain pulsating inside his heart. It was the breaking point. Donghae bent down and swiped his fallen skateboard and began walking past Sungmin towards the skate park.
“Hae…no, please!” Sungmin sobbed as they brushed shoulders. Donghae continued to walk away, every step against the damp pavement stabbed at Sungmin’s heart. Knowing the fact that Donghae was walking away from him, from them, again hurt twice as much.
Trembling from both the overwhelming shock and the cold, Sungmin bit his bottom lip as he fell towards the pavement, his right knee landing in a shallow puddle. He didn’t give a shit about being wet and feeling gross, his mind only pounded with the thoughts of losing Donghae again. Everything was gone, his final plea, his decision after days and weeks of sleepless nights trying to label their bond, rejected again.
Suddenly the rain stopped battering against his fragile body, yet the wind whizzed up and through his damp clothes followed by a numbing chill. Donghae was there holding his umbrella over them, shielding him from the cold drops.
“Hae.” Sungmin weakly called out before he stood up to join him. Donghae gave him a soft, reassuring smile, a delicate answer to everything they once doubted, and pulled him into the covered cubicle of the bus stop. Everything felt surreal.
“I don’t know if, this, this is right or not.” Donghae blinked in succession as he fumbled with his words before he extended out a hand. Sungmin brimmed with hope as he looked affirmatively at his best friend before he entwined their fingers together. Donghae nodded and almost instantly Sungmin latched onto him, their lips meeting in another daring dance.
They continued their daring kiss, oblivious to the passing vehicles and the attention garnered from the drivers as they stared impolitely. A bus accelerated across from the street as they locked hands at their sides, Donghae pressing Sungmin against the back of the glass bus stop. A boy on the bus suddenly felt his heart drop at the sight. His grip on the two textbooks tightened as a tear slinked down his cheek.
“Hae. Donghae-ah I lov-” Sungmin nested himself against his neck, his breathing rough and erratic.
“I know. Min, I know.” Donghae cradled his head against his chest, his fingers delicately brushing away strands of matted, wet hair. His other hand traced Sungmin’s cheek and brushed away the tears, his fingers gently silencing his whimpers before his lips dove down and initiated another passionate kiss.
“Let’s go home."
