morning miscellany

O. was an amazing slowpoke this morning, so we were already leaving late for school when we discovered that all the car doors were frozen shut! Luckily, growing up in upstate New York prepared me for this sort of thing, so I ran back inside and filled the tea kettle with hot water, which I then poured over the doors. O. was very impressed by the ( Read more... )

That's one of the drawbacks to home-schooling: if you have an arguement with an adolescent, you have to put up with them all day. There is not the luxury of dropping them off at school and having a cooling-off period.

About oatmeal-Firedrake's mother has oatmeal with applesauce every morning, and has done this for at least 25 years. She might have other health problems, but her cholesterol is amazingly low. I, however, prefer it with cream and raw sugar, but we must make allowances, I suppose. As to low-fat snacks, I have to read labels very carefully. I can have nothing with Aspartame. It gives me serious migraine headaches.

I agree with you about the grocery stores. I find that I will go in Wal-Mart to pick up incedentals, but for major shopping, I go to the Publix at Brown's Bridge and 400. Not only because a certain daughter works there (however temporarily, as she searches for the elusive dance school position), but because it is clean, well-lighted, has a wonderful selection, and polite employees.

Publix does a wonderful job in hiring and training their employees, I think. I've never been in one where the people weren't friendly and helpful. I love the atmosphere of those stores. And during the energy shortage the first couple weeks after Katrina, the store I shop at even had its lights dimmed, in order to conserve power. I thought that was awesome.

Thanks! I've gotten to the point now where I, too, can plan my foodie rewards. It makes the diet ever so much nicer!

yay! *doing my happy dance*
so good to see you making choices that allow you to, well, live.

I liked the idea someone had of eating more soup. Tell chef king arthur to learn to cook soups. I esp love them in winter. it's all about the flavoring - useing bouillon cubes and good spices.

Chef kingofthewho is in fact an accomplished maker of soups (we'll have to have you and thunderman over to eat some with us sometime soon). What's more of a problem is my own limited culinary repertoire! I'm doing pretty well now though--I haven't once gone over my daily allowance of fat grams, and most days, thanks to the elimination of cheese and peanut butter from my diet, I'm at least five grams under the limit. Happily, this means I can treat myself a little tomorrow and again next week at my in-laws' for Christmas dinner.

I don't even wanna look at my fat intake. I know it is better than the average American, but that is not saying much. *sigh* I think you are a very good person .......

Harry's Gwinnett is just a spit away from our house. Close enough to go a few times a week. Perhaps after the holidays (and after R. fixes my van) I'll come steal you away and we'll "do" the FM. I'll even keep you away from the cheese section. *G*
