I don't think it will help, but they left on the cutting room floor the fact that Nero spent the 25 years on Rura Penthe slaving away in the mines. When Uhura mentions that 27 Klingon ships were destroyed, that was Nero escpaing.
I had heard of that scene. While it would explain what Nero was doing in all that time, it still wouldn't explain what the Narada was doing. Did it take them 23 years to repair whatever damage the Kelvin did when it rammed?
That I can't answer. The only idea have is that since they're just a bunch of miners, without Nero they did wander around trying to repair the ship.
And Nero really lacks any punch without the introduction from Star Trek: Countdown, the 4 issue comic series that explains why Nero is pissed off and actually shows the Narada and Jellyfish go back in time. (Where Picard is an ambassador, Data is captain of the Enterprise, and Worf is a Klingon general.)
I have to admit though that I agree with you on all points. especially Chekov's accent being stupidly overdone. but for some reason, none of those things kept me from enjoying the film. and usually i'm a stickler for science, I REALLY hated starship troopers. but I loved this star trek.
I'm still willing to give it another chance, since I know I was cranky when I watched it the first time. And going into it a second time knowing what flaws are there might make me able to turn my brain off and enjoy it for what it is - a modern "Star Trek" action flick.
Kirk joined up the very day Uhura and McCoy shipped off to the academy, on the same shuttle, in Iowa? Come on.
IAWTC!
OH! And Chekov being 17. 17? Assuming that there's some sort of condensation of the educational process in the future (so that one graduates 'high school' at 16 rather than 18), he would still quite likely be a first year cadet at the Academy.
I enjoyed the film for what it was, a new action film based on Star Trek, and I liked it, a lot. However, I think my biggest complaint about the plot was the bit of the Romulan sun going nova... that is a long process and the Romulans would have had plenty of time to evacuate the damn planet, hell, the whole solar system, because even though when the star explodes, it's definately a big fast nasty ka-BOOM, but the death of a star is a long process and I'm pretty sure the Romulan scientists are not morons who didn't notice until it was too late. Oh yeah, Red Matter, wtf?

I remember one time at Bruce's, when he asked 'If you could go live in any game world, any fictional universe'. It was you, me, and Dave there.
Me: Champions.
Dave: Cyberpunk.
You: Star Trek.
And then you made the comment that that was about the most perfect distilling of our personalities as we'd ever likely see :) You were right :)
