“I was very annoyed,” Jeff Jerome, curator of the Edgar Allan Poe House, told The Baltimore Sun. “I’ve been doing this since 1977, and there was no indication he wasn’t going to show up.”
Oh boo hoo, something I had no right to expect didn't happen, I am enraged! How dare a mysterious person visiting a grave for personal reasons not tell a newspaper or something in advance that he wasn't coming this year!
There have been two known toasters; one in recent years described as an elderly white-haired gentleman, who once left a note that the tradition would go 'to a son', and a younger, black-haired man who has left several controversial and political notes in recent years. locals generally disapprove of the notes. Whether or not the elder is dead or ill and retired, I'm sure he's livid.
I know the Poe House and Westminster are underfunded and neglected and this is their yearly Big Thing and thus probably important to his livelihood, but that line really pissed me off, too.
Ah, this must be what my friend was referring to when she mentioned the lack of roses and the intent to bring them to Poe's grave herself. If the Toaster fails to return, there may be a convergence of possible replacements next year, each bearing alcohol and roses. From among these unrecognizable shadows, one may be chosen to be the Toaster for the next 60 years...
Apparently our minds ran along similar paths. I was envisioning a few dozen people dressed in black sword fighting with shouts of "There can be only one".
Maybe then Mr. Jerome would be happy. I'm sure Poe would get one hell of a kick out of it.
