[Sam woke up to the sound of creaking in an old building and the steady drip-drip-drip of water hitting the ground right next to him. He jumped up from his spot on the floor, quickly drawing his knife and edging along the wall. Waking up in a strange, dark place was never a good thing. He needed to get out of here before whoever, or whatever,

[Greatly mixed feelings here on Sam's arrival, but mostly he's just really missed his friend.]
Where are you?

[Of course Castiel had mostly lounged on the couch while he'd been there, but still. There was room.]

A flood? Do things like that happen often here? Are you staying with Dean?

[He shakes his head slightly.]
I'm not. Unless injured or similarly weakened, I have no need for a particular residence.
[And he could bounce between the Tower, the Temple, and Dean's if necessary whenever.]

[Sounded like a good chance for a hunting mission to him.]
Do we know what they are, exactly?
[He nods slowly. Yup, makes sense. Cas is still Cas. Just because they were in a foreign place and he thought it would be pretty great to keep some familiar faces around, at least for a little while. Nope, not slightly disappointed. It's all good.]
What do you do when pretty much everyone else is resting?

Spirits of some sort, but beyond that reports are conflicting.
[Castiel can tell there's something displeased about that reaction, but not what or why. So he just focuses on the question.]
Those here are active at all hours. However it is opportunity to explore or test things.

[Note to self: even when killing something you want dead, it wont stay permanent.]
Well if that isn't screwing with the "natural order".
[Not like you can talk Sammy. And Sam sees that look, the one when Cas is thinking about something really hard and not quite understanding. But he keeps that to himself.]
Okay. So, spirits call Animus run this place, they make strange events happen every other week which may or may not be bad, they also don't let you actually die, there are people here who don't sleep, the place is in ruins but there are places to live, and no one really knows what is going on. That it?

[Good for obvious reasons, bad because otherwise he would've shanked Lucifer with the archangel blade when he had the chance and that problem would've been settled.
At Sam's summary, he gives one firm nod.]
That's accurate.

[The thought of not having to lose the people he loved was reassuring, but he knew better than anyone that even if they could come back from death, watching them die was not easy. At all.]
Alright. I think I can handle this place. Thanks Cas.

[Especially with Sam here, now. Despite the now looming issue of Lucifer no doubt wanting his true vessel, Sam's arrival has brightened things for Castiel, just a little bit. And he knew it would a great deal for Dean.]

[He chuckles a little hesitantly. Out of curiosity...]
How long have you been here Cas?
[Because really, he just saw you today.]
Reply
Three and a half months.
[It felt like a lot longer, though.]

How're you holding up?

I'm alright.
[He's not going to explain that he's gotten into two fights with Lucifer, one with Raphael, one with Anna, and even on with Gabriel. Also not that he's depowered, that Anna wasn't speaking to him, that all his secrets were out, and that now with Sam here there was a serious potential problem. Despite the latter, he's still glad to see his friend.]

[He sighs.]
Alright. Good.
[Part of him doesn't believe Castiel, but he decides not to push it. Instead he just smiles a little.]
