But it seemed to me that the lamentations over fandom's limitations arise very much from an expectation that fandom somehow should operate in a separate, higher sphere from RL, playing by a much more exalted and egalitarian set of rulesThis is really interesting. I had never articulated this idea to myself before, I wasn't even aware it was there to pull out, but it makes so much sense. Your whole post on the issue makes sense, really, but you're one of the sanest people on my flist so I'd expect that

Don't get me wrong, I think fandom is awesome. But I also think that people who approach it as a utopia where their talents are likely to get recognized just because they're there and they deserve it are bound to be disappointed, because fandom is also a social network made up of people, and the normal rules of human behavior don't stop at the keyboard.
And speaking of the better aspects of fandom, it is a great tragedy of our time that the "He-Man: Gay or Not Gay?" quiz expired, because it was hilarious.
He's bridging that gap between a man who has to tell stories about his dad (he's good at pool; he took him camping) and can finally accept who his father really was.
That's a great way of putting it. Ray was blustering about how his father had taken him camping at the beginning of the episode; by the end, he was admitting that the camping story was another in a long string of hopes that his father crushed through his failure to be the father young Ray wanted and needed.

Love memes are impossible to keep up with and it's one reason I tend to avoid them. ;) Another reason is I don't like singling people out. I know so many great people and I feel bad choosing one over another and possibly hurting feelings. Also, I can give compliments, but take them? Noooo. It's not some low self-esteem issue, I just hate when attention is drawn to me. I think it's an attribute left over from my painfully shy days. And, yes, I was painfully shy to the point that I couldn't go up to a sales clerk in the store and ask for help. There was also the phone phobia. I was a mess and no one believes me now

That's also an issue, and one of the reasons they make me flaily.
I know you've talked about your past shyness before, and I think it's great that online interaction has helped you overcome that. I have such a hard time thinking of you as shy! For myself, I've been some combination of amused and horrified by the way I'm pretty much exactly the same; the veil of the Internet hasn't changed much.
