Wow, LJ, way to make my eyes bleed with the pink.
But on a happier note, thank you so much,
sweet_ali, for the virtual candy hearts. Aw.
And to return the favor, and because I want to share the love, I present to all of y'all the valentine my parents sent to me this year. It's really disturbing touching. (
Share the, er, love )

You make me want to watch Due South.

due South is very much a buddy cop show, but it has great characters. I'm enjoying it--and I usually don't do so well with shows that don't have at least one interesting, prominent female character.

Hawk and Handsaw is the only ep that ever inspired me to fic dS.
Can't read SG1 - haven't watched.

My parents did that to me. *cries*

I did not know you were a dS watcher. There's something about the way Fraser fits himself into that hospital that's really compelling.

Your parents are clearly cruel and inhumane.
Ah, and I was mistaken - it was "You Must Remember This" that I ficced for. Ray's insistence and sweetness and determination - he's adorable.

Yes. I do find Christina obnoxious at the beginning (mostly because of her relentless insistence on lying to Fraser at every turn, which is a very rebellious teenage thing to do but no less annoying for that), but I'm always amazed at how much I feel for her by the end. I love that standoff with her and Fraser and the villain chick (sorry, it's been a while since I've seen the episode), with Fraser and Christina finally working together, her finally understanding the enormity of what she's caught up in: "What do I do, Chicago?" It's a great moment. (Also, her calling him "Chicago" should be incredibly annoying, but I kind of love it by the end.)
PUFFIN FACE.
As I've told you, GotW is one of my favorite episodes of the series, and your analysis of it was gorgeous. I have nothing to add, I'm just basking. :) (OK, I will say: YOU SUCK, RAY'S DAD. Because that has to be said.)
And in an episode that is ( ... )

"Hawk and Handsaw" is also a favorite of mine, for exactly the reason you mention--it's deeply strange and profoundly human. It KILLS me that Fraser gets immediately admitted by simply telling the truth (and the "it's a long story, it takes exactly two hours to tell" is so cheap, but I laugh every time), but it's true, too, that he isn't entirely sane, but he's so genuinely invested in the people around him that his insanity takes on a sort of heroic, touching quality. You said it better:
meditating on how reality is often what people agree to believe, is when I realized the thing about Fraser that shapes his unusual view of the world, the way sanity isn't an absolute state, a yes/no proposition, but rather a continuum of agreement about reality, and Fraser, for all his heard-headed practicality, does not agree with a lot of the reality that everyone else around him takes for granted. YES, basically. :) Someone (I'm blanking on exactly who, at the moment) made a great comment to me once ( ... )

They bring out her vulnerabilities well--not just her resentment of her absentee father but the way the criminal lady (whose name I can't remember either) is able to ensnare her by preying on her obvious admiration for and desire to emulate a sophisticated older woman. And the "Chicago" nickname should be grating, but it serves a purpose--she names all her minders by the city, so Fraser starts out as just another minder, but by the end she's using it ironically.
Someone (I'm blanking on exactly who, at the moment) made a great comment to me once that for a guy as smart as Fraser, his worldview has to be a deliberate choice, because it's not like he's just missing everything contradictory to it that's going on around him. I ( ... )
