We're all part of one ecosystem

I guess LJ went kablooey yesterday? I suspected there would be badness when I saw the announcement that they'd be doing power maintenance at the data center. We all remember what happened the last time there were power issues at the data center, right? Still, I suppose the hamster that powers the service needs to climb down off the wheel and ( Read more... )

mmm, Zachary's.

I agree with you on Sharon's callsign--it felt more like an attempt to use another element of the original show (in which Athena was Apollo's sister, and not a pilot), rather than something organic to the character. Frankly, I'd half expected someone to suggest "Toaster". But then that would be funny, and for all its qualities, the show just doesn't do funny.

My understanding is that LJ's kablooey wasn't LJ's fault and the power implosion was external to them. FWIW.

Yes, calling her Athena implies a degree of admiration that doesn't fit right, especially since presumably she hasn't been circulating among the crew the entire time but was just let out of her cell to perform the rescue mission. She played a key role in that, and deserves to be recognized for it, but I would expect humans to still harbor some distrust.

I'm really curious to see the episode Jane Espenson wrote, because the show does not do funny, but Espenson tends to use humor a lot, and I wonder if she'll just drop it or try to work in something subtle.

Yeah, I misread the maintenance post as LJ doing power maintenance at the data center rather than the data center doing an infrastructure upgrade. I still have my doubts about the robustness of LJ's setup, but there's not much they can do when the power cuts out, and at least LJ itself didn't break horribly when they started brining machines back online.

OMG they hired Jane Espenson? I am astonished. And yeah, can't wait to see that.

I want to say she wrote episode 10. I try very hard to avoid any information on upcoming episodes to steer clear of spoilers, but I remember thinking it was odd to give a new writer a season break/cliffhanger episode. Now that they're running through spring, I guess it might not be a cliffhanger. It will be interesting to see how she handles it.

I wonder whether Sharon's new callsign being Athena has more to do with Admiral Adama then Apollo. Athena's Apollo's sister, and now that Starbuck is so screwed up that Adama has essentially renounced her from her emotional hold on him as his adopted daughter, Sharon is the closest thing Adama has to a daughter -- we saw evidence of how close they'd gotten during the Exodus two-parter.

I'm with you on being very taken with the Cylon part of the story. When I heard about the five missing models, I thought they must be unawakened sleepers or some models who had defected to the human camp (with a dun dun DUN! reveal to come later), but I hadn't considered that the seven might be a rebel faction. Innnnteresting...

The alternative is that all of this has happened before.

Ooooooohh.

I wonder whether Sharon's new callsign being Athena has more to do with Admiral Adama then Apollo.I've seen that theory a couple of places and it certainly makes symbolic sense, as well was making Sharon's inevitable discovery that Hera's alive even more of a disaster. (I think one of the reasons the callsign made me cranky was that it makes Athena Hera's mother and that's just mixed up ( ... )

After Tigh killed Ellen in 'Exodus' I felt he was lost. His statements to Adama in 'Torn' just reinforce that for me. Deep down we know that Adama and Lee and Helo and Anders still love Kara and she, in turn, still loves them and she still loves to fly or else she wouldn't have looked so disappointed when Lee grounded her. She has things and people to live for. Tigh may have bitched about Helo having his job, but I saw no indication that he actually wanted it back. And right now his duty is the only thing I could see that would make him want to get up in the morning.

For a really fascinating take on the implications of Kara/Adama scene and the pyschological ramifications on Kara, check out beccatoria's post here. She touched on things I hadn't even considered, most significantly that Adama was utilizing sentments and actions previously directed towards her by her mother ( ... )

Thanks for pointing me to beccatoria's post; that was a really interesting take on Adama's behavior and Kara's reaction. Adama dealt with the immediate problem, but I feel like he just drove the causes underground, and that's really disappointing for me.

Tigh may have bitched about Helo having his job, but I saw no indication that he actually wanted it back.

Yes, the scariest thing about Tigh at this point is that he is completely empty; there's nothing in him that anyone can grab ahold of and work with, he's lost all of his connection points.

I am more inclined at this point to believe that the Six in Baltar's head is a product of his own mind than I am to believe she's a Cylon. But we'll see, assuming Ron actually has a plan.

Maybe the virus is just a happy accident? That could very well be. It's not out of the bounds of possibility for the dying Six to believe it was deliberate simply because she was suffering and paranoid. Oooooh, but it was something that specifically affected the genetic code shared by the Cylons. Maybe, if all of ( ... )

Always enjoy your write-ups. :D

While I don't care for the Athena call sign either, I read it as Helo grabbing onto something that had a ring of reverence and integrity to it. Something that helped to support his view of Sharon, rather than anyone elses. Possibly in the hopes that just by naming her like that he could influence their opinions. So I don't know, maybe it's supposed to read as biased. I mean, they did name their kid after the queen of the gods.

I'll just be over here crossing my fingers that Ron has half the plan you do. ;}

Wow, my HTML r gud.

I can completely believe that Helo thinks that highly of Sharon and feels it's a fitting callsign; he's never been much less than completely devoted to her, and he's obviously bursting with pride that she's become a part of the crew. I had a harder time swallowing the way everyone else seemed to feel the same way without any lingering doubts or suspicions.

I like your thoughts on BSG and don't have much to add. The knitted gifts look fantastic. The booties are especially adorable.

The booties are so small! Baby feet are really tiny.
