the execution is terribly heavy-handed and the resolution is too pat

Primitave John and Evolved John also seemed rather cliche to me. And how come EJ had a slight Southern accent? ;)

he may not be her John, but she's let her guard down a little more around him than she might have around a stranger, and I suspect it's because she's unprepared to associate that kind of ruthlessness with any form of John.

Good point. And while I'm not quite the expert you are on these eps, it seems to me that, at least up until this point, Aeryn was more likely to let her guard down around Sebaceans/Peacekeepers than those of other races. I think if she feels a connection to someone she tends to be more trusting, which is natural, but it also leads her to get knocked out, stabbed, killed...

I read somewhere that Browder was trying to do Bill Clinton. I have no idea why.

Heh. To name just a few... I hadn't thought about it in those terms, but she was also fairly open to Larraq, probably because she felt like she understood where he was coming from. Or possibly because he was hot.

I must admit this was one of those this ain't so hot episodes, what else can I do while its on.

At least for the first 2 or three times I saw it. Then about the third time it began to grow on me. I guess because of how I saw Chiana interact with Paleo Crichton. For the first time I was noticing some of the qualities I enjoyed in people and quite frankly the ones I did not like in others.

For me the second factor of raising the rating of this ep is the music. Again, it filled in a lot of the holes I was not seeing when I watched the ep, and got bored with some of the loopholes you pointed out.

I find myself having somewhat mixed feelings about Chiana in this episode, because on the one hand, I really like the way she connects with the emotional part of John, but on the other, it felt a little like the writers were ignoring the parts of her that can be quite pragmatic and ruthless when her own survival is at stake.

This is an ep that I like OK but never felt tempted to rewatch. But I do love it for reminding me that in a pinch, John's humanity, no matter how battered, comes through. He does get harder and harder, but even by PKW, he wants to save the world...

It's interesting how massive the scale of his choices becomes. I do think, though, that he wanted to save the universe partly because he had no other choice, because the universe wasn't going to leave him alone.
