I really liked the journey into the land of the dead at first; it played against a lot of tropes about the afterlife, and Lyra's separation from Pantalaimon was wrenching. But I finished the novel not feeling like it had not really lived up to some of the cool metaphysical promise of the setup because amassing an army of ghosts was so important to the plot, so that was a little disappointing to me too. Ah well.

Thank you for the good news on SCC! I've stopped going to io9 very often because they are too much of a Gawker site: flash without much substance. Glad to hear this, though.

*snerk* I think wanting to punch Julie Musante is the standard reaction. :-)

I also love Walter Koenig as Bester; he's generally awesome.

I'm really enjoying Bester; he's cleverly diabolical rather than being sneeringly evil, and his cleverness makes him that much more scary.
