Dragon*Con 2008 - The Dragoning

First of all, belated happy birthday sdwolfpup! You are one of the brightest spots on these Internets, and I hope the coming year brings you much happiness in your home, your friends, and your family.

* * * * *

I had a wonderful time this year at Dragon*Con. I'm still trying to make my brain work, and to catch up on LJ, but it made me really happy. ( Overall impressions and a rant )

dragon*con, lj people are awesome, conventions

Everything I've heard about Beau Bridges on SG has been positive, so far as I can remember. Shame about Landry. (Though I did get a lot of joy out of watching the Landry: Worst Boss Ever! episode at VVC, the one where Cameron gets trapped on vacation with him, so there's that.)

Yeah, Beau Bridges is certainly not General Landry, but I do find that if I'm antipathetic to a character, I'm less enthused to hear what the actor has to say, so I was glad to get over that quickly. Bridges was really interesting and--although I probably shouldn't be shocked when this happens with generally big name actors who appear at Dragon*Con--had some really nice things to say about science fiction television.

Oh General Landry, you were the worst boss ever. Hee.

Oh, bless you for posting this. A good con report is almost as good as the real thing :-)

But with much, much less standing in line! :)

whether because of house rules or because someone finally caught a clue, nobody was serving the actors alcohol throughout the panel, and there was a noticeable improvement in the quality and thoughtfulness of the answers.

Er, has that been a problem in previous years and/or at other cons?

The con as a whole sounds both a lot of fun and maddening at times.

P.S. I love Morena Baccarin's new hair!!!eleventy!!!!!!!!!!!!! She looks stunning.

I have no idea about other cons, but for the past two years, someone was providing beer and shots to the actors during the Stargate panels at Dragon*Con, with what I would call mixed results. I don't really care if someone wants to knock one back on stage, but there seemed to be a very weird atmosphere of encouraging the actors to treat the panel as their party time that I wasn't entirely fond of, because a few of them went a little overboard with it.

Isn't Morena Baccarin's hair awesome? It's so short and dramatic! I really like it too.

Was your brother there for the Alabama/Clemson game? Because I was watching on TV thinking, "if I'd gone to Dragon*Con this year, I'd probably have had to skip out for the football game!" :)

Reading your report makes me--for the first time, really--quite sad I wasn't able to go this year! I would have loved to hang out with y'all again!!! I can't say, though, that any of the panels I've heard about make me terribly sad that I missed them. Ah well. Maybe next year!

Yes! That was the game. There was definitely a culture clash going on between the people who were there for the various events, too.

I actually found it pretty relaxing not to be that emotionally invested in any of the panels; I enjoyed all the ones I saw, but it was so much less stressful not to worry about getting a good seat, and to just strategize which lines I was going to get in when. Mostly, it was lovely to hang out with everyone in such a pervasively fannish space. I think that is the real fun of Dragon*Con.

My favorite part though, without a doubt, was hanging out with friends. I feel lucky, in ways I can't put into words, to have met so many people on LJ with whom I get along so well in person, to have connected with such a smart, funny group of people, and to be able to go to something like this and spend, basically, three or four days solid with them and have such a good time.

I have to say, the fact that we can all spend four days together, pretty much constantly, and still be friends says A LOT. ;-)

Great write up! I'll get to mine someday. Stoopid job.

Heh. I'm kind of interested to see if I will be able to finish this one.

I LOVE that we can spend so much time with each other and still get along. It's a rare and beautiful thing.
